clutching at straws, rebuild it, all new parts and new grease and oil, gaskets etc. what can possibly go wrong ?

Solid, as in the plates aren't separating?
Bent or broken pushrod?
Forgot to put the ball bearing in against the end of the rod?
Too many plates? (pressure plate touching the inside of the righthand casing when you operate the clutch).

finished putting it together after hours of cleaning and removing microscopic burrs etc.Paranoid! However, I now have this lovely two finger clutch operation, I'm so happy I could kiss the frog  Shocked
