When you watch someone who works with fibreglass all day and has the right tools, brushes and acetone and waxes it can actually be quite a clean process. The tank only measures about 35" tall and the tyres are about 29" but the design does involve a flat bottom anyway. As for the foam round the house, I think I enjoyed it as the ex was super house proud so I was maybe rebelling a bit. Even to this day I can still hover up the odd bit 3 years later.

i worked with it for 25yrs. as you say, it can be a nice clean process. main thing is  having a big bucket of acetone, a nice wetting out board, and let the materials do most of the work not yourself. anyone with long term experience  will understand that last bit.

So, we have a tank and some wheels. Wheels are from an old taxi with the hubcap mounts removed and powder coated by Tom from Arndale coatings. Tyres and inner tubes from Northants Tyres and possibly the most expensive I have ever brought.
Now the name D72 = because our trabant is D71 and British Bellytank as I will be using mainly parts we had or can source locally. Now this is NOT being built to go to the states as it will not comply at all ( rollcage mainly ) nor can it be used at Pendine as non period correct parts used, we just want to build one.  Basic rules are it must look as close to a 40's 50's tank and be built in the spirit of the days, ie using what you have to hand. No big budget here.
First part found 1 sherpa front axle

Next you need these two, Nick and Gareth. Oh and a fully equipped workshop and some Gin.

The first cut, marked up by inclining the body 3 degrees and using a laser level to remove 2" from the height.

Resulting in this, a body at the right centre line height ( will be trimmed even more ).

Cut outs for rear axle as far back as possible, bottom of diff just about touching body.  Would have liked to go further back but diff would have been seen from the rear and that was not  allowed (by me)

Front axle in with tyres lining up with end of nose, and then we had our true wheel base. Was only about 2" short of Gareths CAD drawing. I think my real world hand made body is not as true as the computers

If  it fits and works, use it, may not be period correct but don't care. Had a complete Ford pop front end to use but turned out to be too narrow so used sherpa front aswell including calipers which fitted the taxi wheels. If they stop a sherpa we should be fine and every part is easy to replace. Andy I think the Pop front end went to your brother Steve who needed the spindles ?

Popped the other half on for a better idea. Flange is about 4" at the moment will be reduced to 1.25" at later date.

Engine wise it had to be a Rover V8, which is handy as we had this to hand. Believed to be a 4.0l from a TVR and a BW65 gearbox  because Gareth had one. Engine has been rebuilt with far too many expensive parts when compared to the SBC we use in the Trabant
