I'm after some advice for my daughter.  She's bought a van and will be having it converted to a campervan, but she has to insure it as a van first, for the couple of months till it can be registered as a campervan - anyone know of a good place to get cheap(ish) van insurance?  She already knows she's going to have to pay extra for short term insurance, but she's been having problems - some places won't insure it at all because it's her only vehicle!

Another one wouldn't believe that none of the use was for work purposes - she's the accounts manager for an IT business, and works from home!

try the NFU ,,national farmers union, but ,,, try two or three different offices as thay work independantly and make up ther own profit margin .

My Vauxhall Combo van is insured through a company called Towergate Insurance. From memory Elephant do a special van insurance scheme.

Thanks all - it's the van pre-conversion that's the problem - double problem cos she still has to use her current van till the new one is converted!

Think she's got it sorted now, it's just going to cost a fortune to insure it for a couple of months while it's being converted.

Some regs to watch out for Bobbi

Also watch the weight of components fitted as you don't want to exceed vehicles maximum load rating Wink

Make sure there are plenty of before, during and after conversion, just done one myself. It has to have a sink, a cupboard, a table and a bed and at least 1 window in the side or rear doors before it will be registered as a motor caravan. Took me nearly 8 weeks to get my v5 back. No rear seat belts required. May be cheaper to have it insured for the year then cancel when the v5 has come back. All she has to say is she has a surf board and needs the van to put it in and for privacy when getting changed.

Thanks for all the advice folks - Lucy knows lots about campervans, this is her 2nd one, she and her then other half travelled back and forwards to the French Alps and lived in it every winter for 4 years, really that's why she's having her own conversion done, because she knows what she needs and what she DOESN'T need - they used to load up every year and put it over a weighbridge to check the weight etc.  The conversion is being done by professionals too.

I will pass on all the advice though.
