Think I'm going to start looking for a rover V8 engine either a 3.5 or a 3.9, how much roughly are they going for these days?

Tis also a bit of a minefield, as some are all greased up and generally bolloxed. I've not seen many around for ages. I got a 3.5 2 years ago for £270 I also have a 3.9, that I got for £210, but it keeps blowing water into No.3. Going to have a go at getting it sorted this Winter. In the past I have seen them go for £1400 for a rebuilt and around £350 for a questionable. Just had a look on ebay and couldn't see any. Always ask for the first few digits of the engine number. Then look on http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/content--name-Rover-V8-Engine-Numbers Then you will get an idea of what you are buying.

I paid 200 quid for the 1970s SD1 engine & box in my Pop. We fitted it more or less as it was & it lasted 4,500 miles before it basically died of old age. I've replaced it with a 1990s Discovery engine which has been rebuilt by the seller, running on the same SD1 gearbox. That cost me 400 quid. Haven't tried it yet cos I'm still rebuilding the car.

A 3.5 should suffice for most trikes, if its too slow a compression increase and decent carburetion should fix it. Most will need a rebuild by now anyway. The early 3.9 is a big bore 3.5, the early 4.2 is a stroked 3.9. Later 4.2 and 4.6? Have issues with liners dropping, hence are cheap to buy. Iir you can get them top hat linered for £800 odd, not bad value really.

My 3.9 came out of an AC Cobra replica, and apparently has a "race" cam (I can't be arsed to measure it), and had only done about 500 miles. The guy decided to chop is out for an OverFinch.
Previously I did not have a temp sensor for the fan, so if the lump got really hot it blew water into No.3 The heads have been skimmed, so I'm just gonna replace the head gaskets, and then see what happens if I keep it around the 85Deg mark, as I now have a sensor/switch. If it holds, the lump will stay in.

I was told my new 3.5 engine's fitted with a 3.9 cam, which is the same as the "fast road" ones sold by people like Real Steel. A straight replacement with no other mods necessary I'm told & apparently good for another 10bhp. i know of a 3.9 complete with heads on but not alot else maybe and inlet manifold spare that could go with it I, was keeping it as a spare ,,but,,
also i have a supercharged 3.5 with wade ,blower, and tri, carb set up but it would have to be BIG,,,, money

Don't want anything fancy, just a basic engine. If price is right I could be tempted to buy one earlier than I planned.

I've got a spare that'll need poking around in & possibly rebuilding, (got to cut down my accumulated junk as I'll be moving out of Loony's workshop soon). I'm willing to take my chances with the replacement I bought last year & rebuild that if I need to, rather than hang on to a heap of parts I may never use. No ancillaries, no guarantees, buyer collects, (Hampshire).

Cant do the electrics and can't afford to pay someone to do them. Takes me me nearly 4 months to save £100, ESA doesn't give much money.
