£65 per week plus electric,,plus poll tax etc etc

whats the rent like in other area,s 

i,m not tied down yet as such and would rather live nearer more like minded monkeys then i wouldnt be billy,,,,,billy, no mates and it would help me  a great ammount

I just been on a jolly "op North" (Doncaster) surprised how cheap things are up there, property etc. compared to down 'ere in the West country. £95.00 seems about right looking in the local rag.

South of Birmingham expect £450 a month minimum for a room.

Brother in law is paying 750 a month for a room in clapham

My lad rented something not much bigger for over £500 plus council tax and utilities. He had to find the majority of the furniture including a bed. It was not a nice place and I think the only reason he got it at that price was because the previous tenant was dead for a couple of weeks before they found him. My lad eventually couldn't afford it and is now in a bed shaped box with shared toilet and bath for a bit less, £400 I think, and for two days a week he has to care for his 5 year old Daughter there. The best of it, both these properties are in Bournemouth but in the Boscombe area which is renowned for halfway houses for paedophiles and drug users. 
I bet you feel quite fortunate now Spanners.  I expect £260 is probably the cheapest you are going to get.

In Dorset there is a reclaim centre where they collect furniture and then sell it at low prices to people with little income/benefits. Some useful stuff can be found there and for about £15 they deliver what ever pieces you have selected. Check out if your area has one. The British Heart Foundation does a similar thing and their big furniture shops are all over the place. Check them out online for more info.

P.S. If you can get by with just a mattress, then you can pick up a new single for £25 to £30 which is reasonably comfy, at most of the small bed shops you find hidden off the main high street.

Plus the bond, usually a grand minimum, plus at least 6 weeks rent.  My children have always looked to me to help with that but money is tight especially if sus landlords find a way to not give the full bond back from the previous property. Bond legislation has improved but they look for the tiniest faults to keep some of that money.  A lot of the time people end up having to go to somewhere less salubrious in order to get a landlord who might just ask for two weeks rent in advance.

Like Stinkey said, it is not easy to start from scratch. Those who are having to rent while trying to save for a mortgage, well I just don't know how they manage it, apart from moving back in with their parents.  That's for the parents!

I bought my first house when I was 20 (1980 - rented before then). It was £6950 with the deposit being 10%. Of course wages were much lower then but I think todays youngsters in the South have to find about 2 and a half times what I did to save that 10% and that's on a decent wage.

2 bedroom house next door to me is £450/month, solme on the street behind me are £395/month, Barnsley, that's for a house, not a bedsit. In Wakefield there are some bedsits that are £50.week all in (elec, council tax etc)
