Battle of Britain day is September 15th, with 2015 being the 75th anniversary which was being marked by a special event starting at the old WW2 airfield known as Westhampnett, which today is the infield to the Goodwood motor racing circuit.

From what I understood, it was hoped to have between 30 & 40 aircraft taking off, in groups of 4 if numbers allowed, to fly the 10 designated routes.

We were fortunate to have applied and receive the free tickets that were on offer before they “sold out”, so trekked down to Goodwood to watch the assembled planes take off.

We counted 33 take to the air, including the Blenham, and to say that was impressive would be an understatement!

The Ch4 TV prog in the evening said that another Spitfire, which would have it made 34, unfortunately had reason not to take the air.

After each group of planes for a particular route took off, they got themselves into a formation, and the did a flypast (which in itself was impressive) over the Westhampnett airfield that they left only a short time before, before heading off on the scheduled route.

The PA was silent during the taxing, take offs and flypasts, so the sound of all those lovely engines was undisturbed - t'was something very special.

I’ve include a few snaps to give an idea of what the airfield looked like prior to the planes taking to the air. Sorry, no action-shots as was using a cam-corder during the take-offs & fly-bys.

A cracking day for those tens of thousands at the airfield.

We watched the programme last night..prince Harry was larking about with Dermot..what a nice down to earth guy he seems. I'm sure his mum would have been very proud of him ? He even gave up his flight for somebody else.. Cool

I didn't see the programme but I entirely agree about Prince Harry - I have a lot of respect for him and I think if I met him I'd enjoy his company.  I think Diana would rightly be proud of her sons, at least before she died she was able (in spite of any opposition from the Family) to give them a good grounding in being human beings rather than 'royal personages'.
