Thats the idea I had. I was going to either weld up the Fiesta diff, or just have the other drive shaft on a bracket welded to the frame to stop it turning, but after listening to members who know a lot more than me, who said the ratio's would be all wrong, it was suggested that I try and run a shaft out of the back of the gearbox. The five speed Fiesta box that I have has an extra cog sitting on the forth gear shaft, and if I understand correctly, that cog can be taken off, and an adaptor made up to join a propshaft to a normal axle.
What I have at the moment is an 1100 Ford Crossflow. A Fiesta box which will bolt straight on to the back, and a VW Beetle trans.
Options are-
1. Engine> Fiesta box with all the gubbins taken out and used as an adaptor plate >VW trans.
2. Engine > Fiesta box with everything in place, and a shaft coming out of the back of the gearbox >some sort of axle.

I actually looked at a box out of a Bedford Rascal, but they are like hens teeth to find now. If I stick with the vw trans which I have at the moment, I would only have to find an extended set of rods from back to front.

There's all kinds of things that can be done with the selector - MGf uses cables, which could be adapted to a rod very easily, my mgzt uses cables ( although you wouldn't know it), which move a selector in two planes.
On my hill climb tf I've bored through the box so the rod comes out the front and will do away with the cables completely.
I have to say though, some sort of auto would be my choice if I could do it, don't fancy hanging on with one hand on full chat on a v6. I could of course buy s sequential kit from quaife, but £5000 odd is not my idea of fun.
As long as the 5th gear overhangs the bearing set it's relatively easy, otherwise you would need to use a roller type bearing withe the output shaft fed through it - fraught with difficulties.

Trying to cross the generation gap, today I spoke with my 2 grown up grandchildren, both 20 ish. Told them I was getting into "steam Punk". After much hilarity the answer came back " Gramps, grow up, Steam Punk you??? no way" was it something I said??  |
