Distance of Axle tube to diff casing
«
on:
November 13, 2013, 03:29:57 PM »
I have just got my new axle tubes back after finding some body to turn them down and they have also welded my hubs on for me.
The problem is I have waited so long for this to be done I cant remember how far the tubes must be pressed into each diff casing.
Can any body HELP ?
Be helpful showing distance by picture .
Thanks

Difficult to tell from the marks on the tube due to the chamfer on the case but it appears to be 2 3/8"

Thanks Olds
Because of the discrepancy between the new tube and the old, I need to know from the outside face of the hub carrier and the diff casing.
Hope this makes sense

Discrepancy
Been looking through my build notes and sorry but I can't find it. Know I had it written somewhere. I will try to measure my axle later.

half shafts vary plus minus 5mm merv so measuring another axle may not help ?? i would put your shaft in and run the tape from inside edge of bearing to where the tube seats then you will be close to spot on then cut your tube and fit and check half shaft goes all the way in before you drill tube

The drive shafts, ("half shafts"), are a splined fit into the diff gears, so your new tubes can be a few mill over or under length & should still fit.

Both sides of mine measure out at 453mm from mating surface of brake back plate to the diff housing. This has new tubes I made myself but I think that I was careful with the length.
As stumpy says, fit the half shafts and measure. Allow a small amount for clearance as the last thing you need is the shaft to be in compression.
