Havent tried it andy.No more time TBH! Last try is to fit an expansion tank higher than the stat.Large diam pipe to t into the top hose,smaller pipe into the rad overflow hose. Blank off the rad cap ,and put a 7lb rad cap on the expansion tank.This trike has taken me to hell and back over the last couple of years. I doubt it will be taking us to Spain and back as planned!

You say that you had nothing out of the cap or into the bottle, this seems strange if the temp went that high unless you were seriously short on coolant to start with. Has the radiator ever had something like radweld in it?

No ,brand new rad! Ive now started to fit a sealed system. Header tank above height of stat. Large pipe t'd into top hose etc. Test drive tomorrow,if doesnt work ,cancel all bookings! Hey Ho!

Rod. Just a thought but what type of radiator cap are you using? I ask because earlier you mentioned that coolant was escaping from under the cap. Those for use with an un-pressurised bottle have two rubber seals. One as normal and one that seals to the top of the neck. If you have a standard cap it will have the coil sprung normal seal and a steel sprung disk that presses on the top of the neck. This type will allow excess coolant out but as the system cools, because its not sealed to the top, can drag air in there rather than from the catch tank. This can cause a pump effect as the system is constantly changing pressure and your cap is not the highest point.

Sorry , only just spotted this.
Your problem is rad mounted lower than thermostat housing allowing an air lock which keeps expanding and blowing water out .You need to be able to fill to stat level . Reliant rad is same as Mini one and does NOT fill to the neck but rather about an inch lower. Original ones have a small wire pointer in the neck to show fill level.
You need to adapt the stat housing to take a fill and over flow tank at that point . You then set the engine up and run from cold with the expansion bottle held up higher than entire water system, once it has burped and settled down you can then lower and reinstall header tank on trike.
Another way to do it is have the filler neck on the rad extended by soldering a brass tube between the cap and the top tank so that the cap once again becomes the highest point .Probably best to also solder an expansion ( as opposed to overflow) take off pipe about an inch down from cap on extended neck.

To do this, I would think that the easiest and quickest, way would probably be to fit a fill and overflow into the top hose, rather than try to modify the stat housing, being as you have a fairly long hose.

I was taking notice Hunter! but filler in the top hose still wont be quite high enuf! Going to fit a bottle with rad cap,so that the bottom of the bottle is level with the thermostat ,then connect the lower pipe from the bottle T'd into the top hose. The top (smaller diam pipe) connect to the overflow stub on rad. Blank off the rad cap on the top of the rad.Doing this tonight. CORRECTION.............The pipe from the top of the bottle has to go to a high point in the system,not to the rad overflow stub. I will T into the pipe from w/pump to rear of head and create an upstand on this T, for this pipe to fit into.

Ive now plumbed it all in but TBH I cant tell if its ok or not! Water is in and warming up. I do know it looks appaling with all that pipework and jubilee clips all over it! Oh well time to cancel the ferry etc. Sincere thanks to everyone for your help guys,I give up! I guarantee I wont ever ride it again. Had enough! I feel its an omen! Another one for e bay me thinks! if you sell it some one will move the rad up 3 or 4" job sorted. i can remember talking about this same topic on this trike back last august

Its one small design modification to an excellent machine. I know you feel sick about it now, but in the context of the overall build its just a blip. If the pipes look ugly now you can sort that later. Hope it goes ok for you Rod, don't cancel yet
