The dreaded broken bleed nipple! This one is in a spare caliper that I recently bought to overhaul. In the first picture I have already drilled the nipple and fitted the torx bit.....then I thought about photographing the process to show you lot on here! The first job then is to select a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the outside diameter of your torx bit. I used a T25 torx bit, this is small enough to fit the nipple after it is drilled out but chunky enough not to snap instantly. Making sure that your chosen drill size fits inside the nipple and leaves a fairly decent wall thickness......  Another method of removing a broken bleed nipple Drill down the centre of the nipple to the depth of the shoulder on your torx bit.  Another method of removing a broken bleed nipple

Place the torx bit squarely into the hole you have just drilled  Another method of removing a broken bleed nipple Then hit it into the nipple as deep as it will go, idealy up to the shoulder, as the deeper it goes the better. The torx bit is hardened and the nipple isn`t, so it will hammer in nicely.  Another method of removing a broken bleed nipple

Take a spanner, or socket that fits the torx bit hexagon and gently move the torx back and forth. At this stage you dont want to force it, the torx will break. Heat and/or penetrating oil can be applied if required, I was lucky and didn`t need either.  Another method of removing a broken bleed nipple After a while you should feel the nipple start to move. Apply a small amount of force to unscrew it, then continue to rock it back and forth again, keep repeating until it eventually comes out.  Another method of removing a broken bleed nipple

I`ve been out the trade a long time now Mike, I think my signing of the official secrets act has expired  i,m starting to feel the same , when ,EMILY, went bang on the local garage forecourt their mechanic/technician said,,,,ooo, its got a carb,, dont know owt about them only work on injection and plug n, play stuff dont know where to start with a carb,, doe,s that mean that we are now ,,old school mechanics ,

So much technology is going the same way. I stripped, cleaned and reassembled our washing machine the other week. Most folk haven't a clue, but its not hard if you take time to look at it. Same with computers, they seem hard, but with the right point of reference and background, they are quite approachable. So many people have been disconnected with the technology around them, thinking it is somehow special and they can't get it. It's a sad situation.

a couple of my friends are mechanics. one at a toyota dealer, one at a garage and one in a race workshop
the dealer is a parts fitter. if it dont work in XYZ replace ABC. ad nauseum. almost no fault finding or diagnostics required
the garage guy is into everything. hates carbs but knows them can tinker with suspension setups and i've never seen him not have a real good crack at fixing anything thrown his way
the race guy loves his forced induction fuel injection. almost totally dismisses carbs as a waste of time. all about power on the road. Faster faster faster. hes an in demand fuel tuner. also a great fault finder
