Does the horn still work?
Some Hondas seem to use a common earth for all the lights and often the horn as well.
Check the earth lead and connection.

So it's just the headlamp that's not working then and probably instrument lights.
When you say
could it be the ignition as the lights come on when i turn it on?
do you mean that the headlight is still working but only if you turn on the ignition or that they should come on with the ignition but now don't,

the lights are meant to come on automatically when the ignition is switched on,
my main lights and side lights do not work at all when i turn the ignition on,
i changed side light bulbs cos it looked like one had blown,
both head light bulbs look good but aint got any way of testing them Tongue

You will probably have a lighting relay switched by the ignition circuit for the headlight . If both side and headlight are not working I would expect the problem to be a multi connector has come apart.
I suggest that you either borrow a test meter or make a simple tester using a bulb (known to be good) and a piece of insulated wire.

The only place that might cause you a problem is at a connector so that's the place to start

Just spray contact cleaner on all the plugs and sockets of the wiring harness.

Even if a connecter hasn't come apart, it can lose the connection if it's dirty - pull apart and clean with some fine emery paper or squirt with WD, put a bit of vaseline on to stop it happening again (once you find which one!)
