just pulled my suzuki ls 650 savage from it's winter hibernation

http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t373/Eddie096/1201210594.jpg
oil leak on ls 650

and it seems to have developed an unusual oil leak from the 2 lower footpeg/engine
mounts .does anyone know if there are O rings or oil seals in here,if i need parts i'd
like to have them to hand before taking it apart.

also the reason for pulling it out in the first place was to inspect the timing chain tensioner
as they are prone to fail with a lot less miles on than mine has, ther is a mod on the savage
forum to extend the tensioner but i wonder if anyone on here has tried it

thanks

Hi Eddie.
Try looking higher up as oil will always seem to come from the lowest points. If this has started while the bike is not being used then the usual areas are the gear change seal and gearbox output seal, Seeing as the RH side has oil dripping and thats not the lowest point when on the side stand, I would look at the clutch/timing chain cover gasket.
Always liked the savage as there is so much potential. Seen them turned into chops, bobbers and street scramblers even a cafe racer.

Thanks for the replys guys

yes ON they are very popular for modding I'd love to bob this one but it's in quite good shape
I just had it resprayed last year but it needs a back mudguard and that might be my reason
as it needs changed anyway but Lesley loves it the way it is...the long and short of it is
I'm too indecisive, if I do I post the build.

the cafe racer is very big in the states where a kit is available but I don't see many over here
at all

got the engine caseing split tonight and i'm glad i didn't put of any longer
the plunger on the tensioner is at almost full travel max recommended is 17mm
mines about 18  Shocked

a recognised mod for this is to extend the tensioner by welding a tab on the end
and drilling a new hole to mount the guide so thats probably the way i'll go with it

also the oil leak does seem to come from the bolt as higher up on the engine is dirty but dry
apparently this bolt needs to be done up really tightly to stop this form happining

I also have a problem with clutch slip which is apparently caused by the wrong
type of oil. i have run it on 10/40 since i got it 7 years ago and have always had
the problem

It needs an oil with a zddp of 1250 or more and apparently 10/40 mo2 spec is only
about 800 does anyone know of a suilable oil or additive or hend how to find this info
out about an oil. I'v asked our oil suppliers at work and they have never heard of this zddp
telling me it is an americanisim and not to worry about it

thanks

there's a little bit of wear on the teeth of the tensioner shown bottom right, just in front of the machined
area. does anyone think this would be a problem or suggest a way of cleaning them up

we have come to the conclusion thet this tensioner has already ejected from the housing (see earlier photo)
from the wear on the side and teeth and also a mark on one of the gears.

this is on a bike with only 22,000 miles on it and which i have owned for 8 years so this must have happened
before that when i got the bike it ad about 15,000 on it so BEWARE anyone with a savage, check you timing chain
tensioner at least every 5,000 miles

anyway modded now and here's the pics

Doesn't that seem excessive for such a low mileage ? Unless you can see a reason I would think the chain is rubbish to have stretched so much on such a low mileage. If it is wouldn't you be better replacing it?

Hi Nabsim

it seems to be a design issue with the tensioner my chain has about .25 inch of play, the accepted max is .75
so this modded tensioner is surposed to give the chain it's full life.I will now however be keeping a close eye on
it to see how this play's out.
According to the guys on the savage forum in the states it's not unknown for the tensioner to eject at
between 5 and 10 thousand miles especially if it has been used a lot on short journey's,a fact possibly bourn
out by the appearance of my tensioner
