Hi y'all can anyone tell me what exactly the three holes are for in the rocker covers , I'm assuming the 8mm is an inlet the filler cap is a filler cap and what's the other for is that breathing out and is it back to the carb somewhere I have a rover sd1 pic as below

I've shortened the oil filler by removing the extension and want a short version of the breather doofer on the other side so welcome any ideas .. Thanks in advance steve

no,pic,  ? 3 holes, should be 1 oil filler and 1 breather in one rocker cover and 1 breather in the other cover ,,

Can ya see it now?

oil filler ,as you know  Wink right hand breather with trap ,,left hand rear small breather used to go to vaccume side of carb/inlet manifold  but should have a small ,flame trap, inline in the hose ,, if not and you get a carb backfire they can ingnite the crankcase oil gas and explode  with a bang ,,,normally the only damage they do is to blow the end out of the valley gasket ,,

So I thought a 8mm filter on the little one and 46mm filter on the other if I cut that doofer down would that be ok?

yep if youre thinking of them little breater filter,fancy jobbie,s
they only need  ,flame traps, if they are piped back to the inlet manifold..

I've got aftermarket rocker covers on mine. They came without any holes at all, so we had to TIG weld in the old filler neck. No flame traps, just a breather pipe at the back of each cover feeding into the air cleaner, (I've got a Holley carb on mine).

rovers played with so many differant breather ideas over the years ,, mostly to get an old design of engine upto the latset emmission standards ,,

the two small ones at the back go to the spacers between the carbs and manifold with flame traps in the line.
the bigger front one goes to the air filter.
If you dont have the little ones on the rocker covers remember to blank the holes off (Them little rubber caps are good for the job) on the carb side or you have problems trying to get your mixture correct.

Thanks guys think ill just put fancy filter things on them then , so last question where's the black hole on top of the blue bit that's attached to the right carb go? Very technical me Smiley

Ok next question I have a radiator in mind to use with the engine it's aluminium and holds 1.6ltrs so part a of this question is is that sufficient to cool? secondly how do I sort the pipework from the gm180 gearbox can it be blanked off ?

The rad depends on size as well as volume.
I know mine is not a gm box, but I have just made a pipe to go in between.
