Hi All

I am now befuddled by the braking requirements in the MSVA manual  Undecided  Huh

It reads:

3. Check that every motorcycle tricycle or motorcycle quadricycle is equipped with either;
a) two independent service braking devices fitted, one acting on the front axle/one acting on the rear axle which together operate the brakes on all the wheels
or
b) a single line service braking device that operates the brakes on all wheels
and
c) a secondary (emergency) braking device ( that may be the parking brake)
or
d) a dual/tandem service braking device which operates the brakes on all wheels
and in addition to any of the above
e) a parking brake device that operates on the wheels of at least one axle
Acceptable combinations are: a) & e) or b),c) & e) or d) & e)

4. Check that every other tricycle or quadricycle is equipped with;
a) a foot controlled service brake device, that operates on all wheels
b) a secondary (emergency) brake device (that may be the parking
brake), and
c) a parking brake device, that operates on the wheels of at least one axle

I am building a reliant based trike with a GS1000 front end. Which category will that fall into ?  I ask as I am still deciding if to link the front and rear brakes to the footpedal, or put a hand control on the handlebars. Reading the above if the vehicle is classified as other tricycle then i MUST link the brakes

I'd assume "Motorcycle tricycle" refers to any trike with a motorcycle style front end, ie,forks & a single front wheel?
If that's the case then parts 3 a or b apply:

a) two independent service braking devices fitted, one acting on the front axle/one acting on the rear axle which together operate the brakes on all the wheels
or
b) a single line service braking device that operates the brakes on all wheels

Well, thats what I'm hoping, I wondered if it meant bolt on trikes for bikes. So what is other tricycle ?

Not sure. Reverse trike maybe, with 2 wheels at the front? Or sidecar style with front & one rear in line & the other offset to one side? Dunno.

Must admit the wording could be simpler but I read it as "motorcycle" being one you sit astride with handle bars anything else being "other"

Do you have to stipulate what vehicle you are building when you apply for a VIN number?   if so make sure on all documentation from that point, it is listed as a Motorcycle Tricycle.   May save any confusion later on.

As mentioned above , definition is by weight, should be near the front of the MSVA document.

Here's another thought, the BRA three wheeler, which was a bit Morgan 3 Wheeler-ish, and ceased manufacture a few years back, albeit in kit form, used a pair of disc braked front wheels, whereas the single Honda CX rear wheel retained it's drum brake as a hand brake ONLY, and was not connected to the two fronts in any way, sooooo......., how did that pass muster? or indeed the required Test,I'm interested, so if anyone has the definitive answer to this one, let's have it please Undecided Undecided Undecided Undecided Undecided :-\Morrag

Hi All

GOT IT - in the Glossary:

Motorcycle tricycle
A tricycle which is designed and constructed with a single front wheel and motorcycle type suspension and steering.

So, thats good - now I feel comfy having seperate front and rear brakes - so long as I dont go over 1000Kg !!
