Hi Andy. You're right about Basingstke having a fascinating social and industrial history. As well as Thornycrofts you had Wallis and Steevens the steamroller and traction engine builders, who were right in the middle of town, across from the station where the old civil service building was. It was a nice thriving market town. Then the town planners got hold of it and turned it into a concrete nightmare. I'm sure Old newbie remembers it as it was. As for Tom putting his grandson in the tanker the poor lad, lets just hope he hasn't got any chimneys that need sweeping.

Yeah, maybe it's a sign of impending old age, but I love all that stuff.
For those that haven't been, the Milestones Museum in Basingstoke's worth a look. Lots of old buildings from around Hampshire, taken down brick by brick & rebuilt into street scenes that you can wander around, with old vehicles parked on the streets, shop displays, a working Georgian pub etc. It's suprisng -& slightly scary, how much of it I remember! Some of the road sections are made of wooden cobbles -blocks of wood soaked in tar. My dad lived in London as a child & used to say it wasn't unusual to see streets of those wooden cobbles on fire!

Tom said the tanker was still full of crude oil when he bought it. He plans to fill the rear 2 compartments with sharp sand when it's finished. Apparently, they're very light on the back ends without a bit of a load in them. The Blue Peter tyre lorry has 2 tons of tyres thrown in the back all the time to make it easier to drive.

Funny you should say that! I've still got it here.
Suddenly realised when we got back to the workshop & unloaded everything that we hadn't given it out, (we award someone every year with a small trophy, but decide on the day who it's going to & why).
Any nominations?

Grin I helped Lesley bundle them all up last week.
She & Steve are planning to set up business building race cars & doing custom work from their workshop in Wiltshire, so were having a clear out. Sold 3 bundles of 18 magazines at a pound per bundle I think.

There's an idea! As Tom said though, he's spent lots of 250 quids on it since then.

Local newspaper report. Incorrect figures as usual.
