north i understand the cleaning powers mollasses has but the chemicals used in cleaning an item for powder coating isnt just the old blast only any more
i did powder coating for years
there are different baths that a chassis can be dipped in before it actually gets anywhere near getting painted
it might be cheaper in the long run for you to phone round and see what is on offer locally i wouldnt just try a small powder coaters try even an industrial one
also with an industrial p/c they will have bigger and more baths so the  cleaning process will be better
as some companies will do big stuff to fill in if they have any quite days or if a manager is away homers is a painters pay really as pay from working for someone isnt great for powder coating

I did not realise there was any chemical baths involved, but i never realy looked in to it. I had a local guy in mind but i did not want the chassis blasting at all, it is a fantastic chassis the devon  and has only slight light surface rust in a few places so i want to eliminate any abrassion if i can.    But i may just nitromors it and sand it by hand and spray it bow in view of what you say, it would be cheaper but i wanted a more durable long lasting finish. Any advice on the best paint for looks and durability to look out for.

On my kit car restoration, I have used the 3 stage POR15 paint. It is at its best if you have surface rust. Base coat :- POR15 Rust a black paint that reacts with the surface and seals the chassis. Mid coat :- POR15 Tie Coat Primer, this is a grey paint so you can see where you have painted, and is the primer for the top coat.  Top coat :-  POR15 Blackcote, nice shiney black paint that looks like its been powder coated.
Warning:- if you get the base coat on the lip of the tin and put the lid back on, once dry, thats your lot!!! it wont come off again Shocked   had to use a hacksaw and cut the top off Embarrassed and as for your skin Undecided

The only down side to this paint is the cost, but you do get what you pay for. Available from Frost Restoration.

You could make a temp tank by tying ladders together and draping a cheap
tarpaulin over them, same as the fire brigade do for acetylene and oxy bottles after a fire.

Don't forget whatever you decide upon, you need to get the chemicals back out afterwards. So lining your pit may seem ideal up until you are bucketing it out.

Rent a skip & line it with plastic? Good point about the bucketting though Archie.
I've used several powder coaters over the years & even the most professional only shotblast before coating. Not heard of one that chemical dips first.

I got a hipo submersible pump i use regular to, ERem  Embarrassedremove some water out of a very different tank i have on my property Grin Grin its little cheap and will pump out the molasses to within a inch of the botom.
It may not be that practical though from whats been said, so may just remove the remaining chassis black ans bitumen then spray it.

You need a big tank? How about an Army surplus Chieftain?

Sorry, it just had to be done.

what about an old IBC container , just cut the top off the plastic bottle , got to say none of the coaters i know do any other prep than blasting the item . they maybe use different media for different metals but other than that all there dips are for preperation only

I just wanted to get all the surface rust off as its only very light with out any abrasion and i really rate the molasses method its brilliant and i wish i had known about it years ago.
I don't know whats involved all i know is i always had  motorbike frames blasted at danum light industries and then took the frame straight to tom blenkinsop for powder coating, and now i just take the frames to AM Beavers at cottingwith. this i will probably do if i cant sort out a tank of some kind.  Thanks for the suggestion.
