DESPERADO . Is a creature conceived out of of desperation and a need to do some thing interesting with  Unmarketable components from several technically brand new never started let alone assembled Marlin kit cars i purchased largely for body panels and mechanical spares for our two LWB Trialers. This was no planned build and will inevitably slow work down on my Austin Devon that is currently my main project. But on a pluss note its an easy assemble and if i use the spitfire 1300 engine or a 2 litre six little fabrication to the chassis will be needed, and the bodywork can take the bulk of the time and is the part of this build i am looking forward to the most.
DESPERADO will be based around a Brand new 1980 Grin  Grin shiney black T (stands for  Triumph based )Model Marlin roadster chassis. And home brewed  all alloy Bodywork with marine ply or alloy checker plate floor pans.
The idea is to build an early  1930s style light car with four seats but the rears incorporated in to the rear body in the form of a dicky seat.  Not sure about the dicky seat i think it may just make VOSA have a Dicky Fit when they saw it, so i may have to compromise there.
I decided to name this car Desperado, as its been totally desperate trying to give!!! Sorry Sell this car as an item comprising of a pile of components even though the inventory of these components is mostly Brand new still packaged mechanical and electrical parts and reconditioned major parts axle gearbox engines with bills and even photos to prove work done.
After Offering this car for sale for the last year with everything to complete it including engine for 300 quid i drooped the price yesterday to 200 pound complete. Offered it to a current Marlin Owner as a winter build up. He turned up here today and made me an offer of 120 pounds, this i politely declined.
This pile of parts is  worthless its a sad fact but true its the IVA No one wants the hassle of it.
So we came up with a plan, keep all the marlin panels and fibre glass that will fit the other two Marlins  as spares, and use all the dedicated Triumph parts and chassis to build a  early 1930s style  special  i can never afford to buy one and i have always wanted one. This is a way to use up near worthless left over components and build some thing interesting.

Ooh, I like that!
Some people just don't have the vision to see what a pile of parts could be do they. I bet once you've built it, they'll be falling over themselves to buy it off you. Mr Kapri will be the very chap to advise you on what will or won't pass the BIVA registration test, but he's often told me it's not as Draconian as some think it is. You just have to think a bit more creatively, which is half the fun.
Looking forward to watching this one.

Well its worthless I have to iva it anyway if its left alone as a marlin i don't want a marlin i am falling over them now. , i don't use T model mechanicals and ancillaries so its give it away, sorry but 120 was an insult if you added up the sum total of the components alone new in boxes its over 5 hundered quid man i was robbing myself but just wanted the space but Now i am even keen to start it and it is a super strong chassis the T Model all box section and no pressings like the M and they are super strong anyway.
I think i will leave the front suspension as triumph, i know a beam axle would be better for looks but just thinking about the mechanics of it all makes my shudder. The triumph is straight forward and i don't want to speak too soon but i do think this could be a fast build if i get time to keep on it.
Cutting some alloy for the sides today and then sort out the bulkhead and floor board suports the marlin ones are used i have some SWB marlin doors i could use but may not bother with doors just step over the chassis side rails as this one was intended.  Like a minature bently, i was going to use the spitfire engine, but kind of leaning for the GT6 engine now and i have all the lucas PI system for it X2 a 2 litre with PI that would rev nice and sound beautiful.

Side panels cut and folded had to fit two new front radiator grille brackets to the chassis and i will try and cut the front screen surround down tomorrow some time, The marlin as a screen surround that doubles as a roll cage you can lift the car in it, i am using this shaped channel as a upper bulkhead rail and to mount the Aero screens on and bonnet support plate it is strong enough to swing hinges off too should i decide to hinge the bonnet.
Will take a few pictures tomorrow they will explain it far easier than words can.

Made some time today  Grin Grin Grin A magician me like!  Wink
I need to clear the desperado out of the back building to be able to provide a dry area for welding the Devon cills and arch lips every time i try and do a bit outside it rains. And as there is little welding to do to it or refinishing for that matter i can just store the despo inside and work on it outside when the odd dry day shows this winter optimistic aint I.  Grin
So i want it rolling with a bodywork quite complete and engine and mechanical s on as soon as so i started butchering the thing yesterday this is where i am at right now lots done actually and a lot of head scratching and tape measuring as me in a clear route to again what i hope to be a fast build.   Put my head on the block there bet i live to regret that..  Grin
Sorry for the none too panoramic photos but its basically in storage and you cant swing a cat round in there at the moment. Once i get it out it will be better.

the rear hoop above the shocker has to be cut off the chassis as the next job to enable the
rear frame work to be welded to the top rail and the seat belt anchor point.

The front upper bulkhead rail will be made from the top few inches of the roll bar screem frame
it will be mounted verticaly and welded to the chassis in the exact same place as the original
and the rear vertical suport will be retained just shortened to act as a scuttle frame bracket a
nd dash board  mounting i have not yet decided on a hight for this rail but will work it our soon.

Coo, you work fast!
I was at Brooklands Bodycraft in Oxford yesterday to collect my bike mudguards. He builds bodies for vintage race cars, along the lines you're aiming for. Very knowledgable & helpful guy. Might come in handy, if only for advice. His name's Derek. If you chat to him, tell him we sent you!

Look a good firm dont they,? i remember you posting on the other thread about aloy bodywork about them.  I want to try and keep things simple if i can a boat tail rear appeals but may be a bit unpractical give that i fancy it being some sort of four seater body.
I am not against fibre glass and if needs must will use it, but i will try and keep it all alloy if i can, and i am scraping an old 50s caravan so alloy sheet, wont be in short supply.  for a grille cowl i was going to buy something and modify it, but with this i want to get the basics done and get it running and driving first i can worry about details latter.  Having said that i am getting the final build spec worked out nice it will be 1300 spitfire engine and i will be using spitfire steel wheels painted cream with British racing green rim edge lines to match the body color. It will be the darker BRG i think more like the first post special i am loosely basing it around.
Today got some new 1 inch box section and inch flat that should do me for the rear body frame, and i will be using this bit of a  blingy rocker cover  on the little Triumph  motor just put the carbs back together tonight new needles and jets  and i took a old head to manifold gasket round to my mates to get it cut in 1/4 plate for the exhaust flanges for the four pipes. All i need is some tube now and i have already got feelers out for some.
Not a lot done today dug this out and decided on the spitfire engine cheap to tax as much as anything man i am not made of money.

Marlins are amongst  the most common kit cars out there, they do as complete cars with proper regos fetch silly money on occasion, but as unbuilt kits they are worthless i have just proved it.
The T model the first ones MK1s some call them are getting rare and will in time fetch good money, the ms marina based are kept popular partially by their trials connections, but still make practical roadsters in their own right.
300 notes is about the going rate for a vertualy completer m model unregistered and perhaps partially assembled they just don't fetch any more money.
Assembly they are a mechano set they really are if you got the bits you cant go wrong.  You would struggle to get a standard one through IVA though, the entire rool bar screen frame as to be milled to a 2.5mm radius all the wings are sharp razors as far as IVA is concerned the radiator grille the rear body edges the list is endless, if one was to cycle wing one cut the screen off as i am doing here and just treat it as a locost kit book car build  IVA  compliant build and follow the well trod paths they have set it is do able and cheaply, but it wont be a marlin any more.

The exterior exhaust manifold will it be frowned upon at IVA i cant find anything about it but don't want to go to all the trouble of making one only to be told i have to hide it.
