Anyone know if the alternator fan is really necessary with the alternator stuck out in the open ?

What about using one with a internal fan, like one of the small Japanese ones?

Surely if you take the fan off you`ll have a piece of the shaft sticking out of the back which you`re either gonna have to cut off or put a boss onto it just to tidy it up a bit. Neither is a good solution as opposed to a fan doing what a fan does. Huh Huh Huh Huh

The alternator is an acr type with the fan behind the pulley. Looks like I'll have to fit a guard or risk my boots/trousers cos if something can get caught up one day it will.

The fan should stay to keep the alternator cool whilst idling, or slow running in traffic, otherwise the diode and/or reg. pack will "cook", probably just before the windings do!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked Morrag

Thanks, guard designed (well sort of  Cheesy) now it's time to get out the hammers again.
