Lots of noise excuse the pun about the DBA of exhausts these days, with motorsport being put under pressure to some extent to keep Decibels down to eu specs and with some cars listed at what level they normally achieve, we apparently have some police forces getting a little pedantic about the whole affair Now if you have a noise figure for lets say a skoda fabia, and it is quote illegal to make a car any louder than standard. That is all well and good but once you modify that same car with an aftermarket exhaust system, then the factory figure id useless, and only then can any figure be quoted if a test as been done on a skoda fabia fitted with that particular exhaust system. A great many exhaust systems and a lot of testing to do then. But it still seems everyone is getting well wound up about these noise levels, everyone from MX tracks to autotest officials all metering away and threatening disallowing non compliant cars bikes etc. I have had 115 Decibels quoted as the cut of point anything over the law will get hard with you. OK 115 DBA is loud i suppose but it is yet one more hoop to jump through, and i am not entirely sure if you make up your own system now, if this could not be judged as you simply making your car louder than it was as standard. .  |

When we put my 3 1/2 litre V8 truck through the SVA registration test recently, it originally measured 106 decibels. The limit was 101. That extra 5db makes a big difference. I fitted another pair of silencer boxes & we eventually got it down to 98.5 -not loud, but still a nice deep burble.
When I was a teenager I always wanted my bikes to be loud, but as I've got older, I've found well engineered, rather than just hard on the ears, is cooler.
My brother Brock, as well as Tony, (CunningPlan), race drag cars. I think they're now subject to stricter noise regs too.

So what you are saying is the new limits are probably where common sense would have you at running silencers anyway?
That is not all doom and gloom then, i have this little lot marked down as intrusive and an annoying aspect of both sport and modified road car exhaust systems.
It is just me i suppose i hate legislation that is pointless, but in this case in the cold light of day. It is probably totally acceptable.

i think it is too, around 98ish decibel is a good limit,
you can have a nice freeflowing pipe with this limit,
as for sport, well i think it should be unlimited, a fair enough complaint if they built it (the track)after you bought the house, but i suspect most complaints are the newer owners who moved in knowing about the sound levels,
not a complaint where i used to work until the new houses were built and sold (knowingly and with a discount because they were next to a noisy factory)
soon as they were in, they were winging, wasting money on solicitors etc, they got no where

Know where you are coming from with the new residents causing trouble. A member of my family is what i can describe as an old type mixed cattle/ arable farmer, they are not rich by modern standards, and hard working. A old lass died leaving a small area of land he had rented for pasture for years, the old lasses daughter agreed to let him continue renting the land, but her new son in law a local where the heck did he get all that money from type never had a job etc, but drives a new audi RS. He decides he wants this land he gets planning on it clueless as to how he managed this , but he did. Then three big detached pads thrown up super fast sold and occupied in next to no time. Then it all started council officials down every five mins, saying he cant keep cattle that close to residents homes it is a health hazard, they get the RSPCA involved who were in fairness sympathetic and supportive, but no real help. Common sense seems none existent here, the planning aspect not approachable anymore as they are existing occupied dwellings, despite my uncles protests at the idea of homes here. The latest blow, the mongrel son in law, had the cheek to approach my uncle and offer him a pittance for the whole farm, and quote you know i will get it in the end. This is not a hollywood movie this is modern day uk.  |

I've been looking at db meter apps for the iPad, can anyone tell me how close to the noise source the meter has to be to get a fairly accurate reading. I also asked this question in the Welding stainless ..oops thread on here too.

Don't know if it's the same for trikes, but when we put my custom truck through the SVA test recently, it was 500mm from the exhaust end & at 45 degrees to it, in whichever direction was furthest from the bodywork.
