Can someone tell me which side the gear change is fitted on the new (Indian) Enfields please. I thought they were now left foot but seen something on EBay that may mean they are still on the right

Looks like the one that made me raise the question has finished and I wasn't watching it so can't give a link. It was a 1995 outfit and the guy said he had bought it for his wife but she couldn't get used to it as the gears were on the wrong side. I know that doesn't mean on the right but most peeps nowadays would mean left as the right side and right as the wrong.

Hmm, here is another one but I can see in the pics that this is a right foot gearchange and it is a 2006 model. You reckon the rough footers are a grey import or something?

Nicked from the web....

Ever tighter European emission norms forced the Bullet Standard 350 to end 2007 as its last model year in the EU, so when on-hand stocks were all sold the British-design engined Bullet became no longer available new. All new models exclusively featured the AVL 'lean-burn' engine. The introduction of a 5-speed gearbox meant that Royal Enfield could 'fix' one of the long-standing quirks of the Bullet design—the foot-brake is on the left side while the gearshift is on the right. Accordingly, the Bullet Machismo 350 was equipped with this gearbox. However, the 'left-shift' gearchange provoked a backlash from Indian Bullet customers, forcing the company to not only continue the Bullet Standard with the traditional system, but even on the Electra it was offered only as an option, leading to the Electra 4-speed (traditional) and Electra 5-speed (left-shift) variants. Sales figures indicated that Indian Bullet customers had shunned the new gearbox, foregoing even the attraction of 5-speed transmission to keep the gearshift traditional. However, customers outside of India took to the new gearbox with pleasure, as a result it became standard fitment on all exported models. New developments included the addition of electric start as an option on some models, while standard on others. In 2007–2008, a limited edition, heavily accessorised 500 cc lean-burn Machismo 500 was launched as the ultimate touring bike. Due to extremely limited production (500 units)and high price, this became a rare bike. The Machismo 350 was discontinued.

Ahah, mystery solved by MrT again Smiley

Thanks tbone, thought it was me being stupid as I had seen the bumf saying they were left foot change. Every now and then I think I may like an Enfield outfit but if I ever get more than that I will have to be careful as right foot would have to be converted.

I was all set to get that FJ1200 outfit that went on at weekend, got on to bank online and they said yes but it sold before I could do the deal Sad

Many of the 'classic' race bikes seen on the roundy roundy (original or newly-built-to-look-original) such as Manx Nortons can often be seen with a conversion set up to put the gear change on the LHS as opposed to original RHS.

S'pose it depends on how 'original' you want it, and if you can cope with a RHS or LHS gearchange. Prob depends what you brought up with.

Little piece of history - Enfields were first built in India around 1986 and were simply called 'Enfield Bullets', it wasn't until 1995 that they got the rights to call the 'Royal Enfields'.  Wink

After re-reading it I think you are right, sorry Tony!  But it didn't read like that the first time.
