The Zenith down drafts were used on the earlier, 750cc engines weren't they? As far as I know, all the 850s used SUs.

I thought that Andy but sure I have seen somewhere that the 850 could come with the Zenith as well depending what they had when it was being built.

hi d-w. if you look on the right hand side at the back of your engine. if you were sitting on it. near the gearbox. just below the head you will see some letters and numbers some thing like  4h/85/10538  the 85 denotes its and 850cc some where on here it say what the others are for

A single 8 in the second part of the number will confirm its 750 and as terry pointed out 85 in the second part of the number is the 850 the 700cc is confirmed by c70 at the end of the number

Dragonwarrior , how about having a look at my Database at

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AlMaGuINd0e9dHppc1Bfa2ZTY0tCV19ZSUUyMXdWX0E&authkey=CKPJ3e4H&hl=en_GB&authkey=CKPJ3e4H&pli=1#gid=2

and doing me a big favour by sending me your engine number so that I can add it to the database to help any future queries ?

Know how you feel ,but remember every small job done on it ,is a little nearer the main goal! Just keep nibbling away at it!
