There was a thread on here (or a hi jack of another thread )about this recently..cant find the dang thing! Roll Eyes......
Anyways, today I decided to have a go at my Terror tubby style linkage,to make the g/lever bearing 'cup' more sturdily fixed other than the orig. circlip. We spoke on the other thread about bolting the cup to the neck of the g/box plate. I tried this today, and found that the neck thickness is only about 3mm,then it is hollow between the inner surface of the neck and the outer  surface of the 'cup' permanently fitted in the g.box top plate,so DONT TRY TO DRILL AND TAP THIS!
What Ive done is cut a piece of tube that fits exactly over the bottom edge of the cup ie the largest O.D. of the cup. Actually couldnt find a piece of tube big enuf,so cut a 6mm piece of 2" pipe ,then opened it up and added a piece to give me the right diam, with a bit of fettling it fitted fine.I then tack welded the ring to the cup,so that the base edge of the cup is flush with the bottom of the ring. . Made 2 straps from 20 x 3 steel and welded one end to the ring ,and the other end drilled a hole to locate one of the top plate perimeter bolts. Fitted a strap on each side ,diagonally opposed. Bolted it all down ,and after some re building of the g/lever itself to get more clearance to the frame when in reverse,it all seems to work fine. Its taken me about 6 hours to do this today,so fiddly,as I had to keep building and stripping the whole linkage at each stage to get everything lined up one part at a time. Pics tomorrow,as Ive taken it all apart to paint it .

Never had one come adrift, but I guess better safe than sorry -the gearstick coming off in your hand would definitely be a bad thing.  Shocked

Happened to a friend years ago in an old HA Viva - lifted the stick to go into reverse and it came away in 'is 'and sir!  So he slotted in back in and could still change gear so every time he neede to reverse we all jumped out and pushed!  Nothing was going to stop our night out!

Happened to me in a Fiat 127 as well - not far from home luckily as there was nothing left to slot in!

Had a gear lever come off in my hand on a Mk II Cortina many many moons ago.  Cheesy

(forgot all about that until read the thread)

Had one shear in a 1/4 ton landie on me!!

But bobbi's story reminded me of a mini I had that the primary gears went on. Mate and me replaced them with some 'borrowed' from a local scrappie, sorted!!! Went to put it in reverse, and it wouldn't go!
Spent the next year or so driving into parking spaces, then sticking me foot out the door to push it back out!!!! Eventually stripped the box down again to find one of the teeth from the original primary gears in the bottom of the gearbox, stopping the selector from selecting reverse!!!!

Good choice, but I'd prefer this:
5 litres of V8 Donovan !! Cheesy (took the photo at the 2011 Brighton Speed Trials)

That's nice
When i was in the 1600E owners club some years ago i was at a show somewhere round London when a two door 1600GT turned up making the ground vibrate. After he parked it up he lifted the bonnet to let the air in and what did we see in the engine bay, only a big block 7litre ford v8 it was a beast.
