When I was a lad many moons ago I lived in Old Town Eastbourne every year there used to be a Bonfire Prosession just down the road. These were run by the local bonfire societies from around the area. I used to enjoy watching them go past with the people all dressed in diffrent costumes. When my kids were young we took them to one of the local ones (Hailsham) but have never been down that way when the season was on. Well we were down for the weekend with the grandchildren and on the Friday evening saw signs that there would be one Sat night along the seafront ending at the Wish Tower with fireworks on the beach. What a great night and the kids loved every minute, it was just as I rememeber with the fire, heat, smoke & smell. They are held mainly in Sussex and worth going to.

Great! I'm amazed the health & safety men still let them do that. Looks like a real fun night out Tony. So what are they celebrating? Obviously nothing to do with bonfire night if it's in October.

Looks like it was good fun. Its good when something you remember as kids is still going and the same today but doesn't seem to happen very often. Round here they have what they call Wells Dressings in most of the towns and villages. Dates back to Pagan ceremonies of blessing (and dressing) the wells I believe. Strange how different areaas have different practices and customs innit?

Like the scarecrow festival in Overton, near Basingstoke!! Although, most the inhabitants of 'Chav'dover here look like scarecrows!!!

Yes it is to do with bonfire night, my mother said that each town/village used to have their own procession, but decided to invite other societies to make larger ones. Of course there is only one bonfire night, but they run the prosessions from the beginning of Oct to the beginning of Nov.

H & S, the only thing I noticed was that when the torches started to go out, they threw them into the kerb where there was a truck behind with people dipping them in water and chucking them in a skip. When I was young they was just left here and we picked them up and followed behind.
