Is it ok to use 15/40 car engine oil in a bike engine.i want to try and quieten the primary chain down on a gl1000

Sorry Spanners, but I'd say no (
) if the bike engine oil has to also lube the gearbox.
Normal 'engine' oil isn't designed to deal with the shearing effect that gearbox cogs etc will put it through.
OK if its a pre-unit bike (like old Brit etc with separate engine and gearbox), but most bikes nowadays its 'one oil does all'.

Shell, Rotella-T.
Getting fairly well known as being used in bikes, has high pressure additives which are helpful to the gearbox and contains no anti friction additives which would not be so helpful.

Sorry Terry in a goldwing its a no no im afraid. most of the chatter from the primary is down to out of balance carbs or tickover to low i used to find that the tickove speed set at about 1050 to 1100 rpm usually sorts it also a bottle of slick 50 the motorcycle one as the car one will cause the clutch to slip

I thought as much toad its just that i have car engine oil here.thanks anyway.i have brought some 10/40/ 4t bike oil.
