I have found a source of electronic rev counters that will work on any petrol engine regardless of the number or cylinders (1-12) £25 each + p&p.

Got mine delivered today will post pics when I have  made it and it's very easy to assemble and calibrate.
max revs 9900 which would suit a reliant perfectly.
