There is a DVLA criteria that has to be met when converting to a campervan classification. Once the conversion is done, pics and a letter are sent to DVLA. I have been told that as from Jan 2014 this will now be dealt with by the local Post Office (theyre probably no less experienced at it than the DVLA bods anyway!) Nothing on the DVLA site on this, has anyone else heard about it?

just in the process of changing mine from van to motor caravan or whatever they told me to call it.. Trev, I had a good long chat with a specialist insurance guy about whether I should change the body type or not, apart from the fact it is £500 cheaper for me to insure a camper than a van his did say that in the event of an accident and a "van" is involved which needs to be inspected for insurance purposes and it is found to no longer be a van but a camper you could have big problems.. I decided to go with the change of type... easier and cheaper in the long run.. I hope!!!!!!

Umm. You might want to rectify that! The DVLA and your insurance co may take a position that will be problematic!

think i,d better look into it then.i did have a quote off a company that specialises in campers and they didn,t ask what it said on the logbook.perhaps they would have took my money and told me after.does it make any difference if i call it a day van or surf bus type thingy ?

My 2p Trev...........Not sure, but to be a 'campervan' it has to have stove, certain size bed etc etc, whereas a 'dayvan' doesnt have a proper bed (or no bed at all?) etc.If it was as easy as what you are asking I think a lot of other folks would have done the same! So I reckon its either a 'Van' ie no facilities,or a 'Campervan' that follows the DVLA criteria mate.
My worry is if it is regd as a van,but has a camper type interior ,then there could be complications in the event of an accident etc. Similarly, some folks are building a basic camper interior to get pics for dvla(and therefore cheaper insurance etc) then removing all/part of the interior to use it as a normal van.Definitely dodgy in terms of a claim!

found this on the net http://www.campervanlife.com/, part of it says you can insure it as a campervan without notifying dvla.

Yes ,I think thats correct.Ive insured mine as a campervan, but they want it converted inside 90 days,or they will cancel insurance. Ive had 2 reminder letters that my 90 days are expired on Jan 4th 2014 .I really dont know how the land lies with not telling dvla,re still being insured,as it may be classed as a change of use or summat?Im going to do mine ,but years ago I didnt bother, now Im more cautious!  Im almost at the 'take the pics' stage to send copies off to DVLA and Ins co.
