Apart from what you`ve mentioned, you may also want to stick your flasher and hazard units in there.
The solenoid is just a switch, electricaly operated, but just a switch, doesn`t matter which terminal goes to what.
As you say, its Battery to solenoid, solenoid to starter. Then the exciter terminal on the solenoid is connected to the start button/switch.

Either will do the job but will need to be wired up differently.
There are also 2 different types of 3 pin unit, the older electro-mechanical type or the electronic type, again either will do but the wiring is completely different.

Lets deal with the 2 pin unit first, the terminals on these are marked B & L.
B is the supply (+12v in)
L feeds the switch

The Electro-mechanical 3 pin units are usualy marked X, P & L
X is the supply
P feeds your indicator warning lamp
L feeds the switch

The electronic units will be marked 31, 49 & 49a
49 is the supply
49a feeds the switch
31 goes to earth
note the absence of indicator warning lamp. This unit is usualy used when you have 2 warning lamps, 1 for each side, where the feed for these is picked up from the switch output.

There is a 4 pin electronic version of the above, with an additional terminal marked C. The C terminal feeds the warning lamp.
