I need to solder a nipple on to the twist grip end of the throttle cable . Ive soldered nipples on before ,but only for car applications. Looking at the twist throttle set up it seems to me the cable has to flex right up to the point it goes in to the nipple to allow it to roll round the mechanism.I guess this is the point they fail .My previous car related attempts have always ended up with the cable going solid with solder a bit away from the nipple. So is there a trick to preventing the solder travelling up the strands? My usual way is to tin the nipple, push cable thro' hole, open up and splay out strands to sit in 'pocket' in nipple, then tin the strands, and fill with solder. I usually use a large electric soldering iron(will have to dig it out ,hope it still works!)

Sumo posted a thread on Making Cables a while ago, (sorry TBone, I thought it was one of your tech pieces. It's on our list of stuff to add to the main site).

Basically the same method you describe. On Reliants I usually buy a cable that has the correct fitting on the twist grip end, then cut the other end off as the SU carbs don't use a nipple, just a pinch bolt on the cable itself. Most old fashioned bike shops, or even bicycle shops will sell a universal cable kit that comes with a small nipple fixed to one end of the cable. You then choose from a selection of bigger nipples that fit over the small one, to suit your twist grip. Or use a screw on nipple, rather than a soldered on one. Either way would eliminate the stiff cable problem.

You'd be suprised how much feedback we get on things like that TB. Your material's proved very useful to quite a few people. It's the basic, old school stuff like that, that youngsters & non shed builders just don't learn these days.
So what else you got for us?  Grin
