Taz has been working today but it was my day off so I took myself off to the Winter classic bike autojumble at Kempton Park race course, on the outskirts of London. Only a half hour drive from home.
As it always seems to be at Kempton, it was bitterly cold with a biting wind cutting down the aisles between the stalls. In spite of the current recession, or maybe because of it, business seemed to be brisk, with everyone weighed down by bargains bought from one pitch as they foraged through piles of parts on the next. The MetalMan seemed busiest -a queue of middle-aged bike builders, clutching various off cuts of steel, aluminium & brass, snaked all the way around his stall & across the walkway outside. I joined them & bought a six inch square of 1/4 inch aluminium for my Ford Pop project for a very reasonable £1.70
I momentarily bumped into Chevy Rick as he appeared out of the crowd & glimpsed Dave & Janie among the sea of Belstaff jackets & woolly hats, but otherwise I was free to wander around on my own, picking up odds & ends for various projects & inspecting all manner of stuff I had no possible use for, but which looked interesting anyway. I thought I'd been quite restrained in my rusty old tat buying, but still seem to have come home laden down with it all.
Some interesting bikes in the carpark, though obviously not as many as attend the jumbles held in warmer months. The January meet is the time to gather up all those detail parts needed to finish that project in the shed, ready for the Summer.
A very successful foraging trip.
