presently I am running 2 u/j,s but 1,i was thinking expansion will feck summat up, and 2, im bored, I thought I would use a bmw doughnut, a reliant slider, and a u/j to combat this, bit tricky as I only have 140mm of space, the doughnut is purely to see if anything gets smoother,,,, tbh, my trike is pretty smooth and is one of the best reliant engines I have had for lack of vibes, but, theres no harm in trying, the prop will work out a bit heavier than a full size prop but shouldn't transmit any jerks or vibes as much, (I think)  hardtail driveshaft,with cush drive started off with making a new plate to fit to the gearbox, the bolts you see are to keep it all in line, etc,

a second plate (5mm thick) was made to enable the doughnut to bolt on, this sits behind the 1st plate, all the bolts go through both plates, all bolts are gonna be machined flush  hardtail driveshaft,with cush drive

machined up to be flat ,etc  hardtail driveshaft,with cush drive u will get the idea behind it better when its put together.....

third plate, other side of donut, this was drilled to suit the donut, and a 7/8 hole through the middle (very good press fit on a sawn off reliant slider) the slider was pressed on, and a further part will be fitted behind it, and all welded up when I know its all in line the u/j which the slider fits into has been shortened as the slider fitted right into it, I only need 4 to 5 mm slider movent to enable easy fitting and to sort any heat expansion (remember, my trike is hardtail, hard engine mounted, no rubbers) everything, if I do it right, will be around 138mm long, in total  hardtail driveshaft,with cush drive (more to follow)

this is what it will look like, except the bolts will be flush, etc, the donut handles around 160 to 200 bhp so should be ok on a reliant  , 3 bolts from one side , and 3 from the other, the heads go through the plate, tightening onto the donut, giving a cush drive, the bolt heads are a slack fit in the plates, giving a bit of movement,i machined the diameter down, as they were very large and all the pressure on them will not be transferred through the head really, plus it helped keep the size/weight down.....,,,,  hardtail driveshaft,with cush drive it should give me a bit of leeway on alignment via the u/j, a bit of expansion clearance via the slider, and extra "cush"via the donut....

forgot to add, cost so far, u/j,,, I had an old one, bolts, 4 quid 3 100mm laser cut 5mm plates, 8 quid rubber cush, 16 quid machining all done by me, so, 0 quid its took me around 2 hour so far....
I recon under 30 quid for it isn't bad, even if I AM a tight yorkshireman

Forgive me for asking, It looks to me as if all six bolts have sandwiched the doughnut between the flanges, the normal setup for the doughnut is three bolt to one flange,and three bolts to the other flange, That allows the doughnut to expand and contract.

Think , reading through, that every other hole is bored larger to allow the flanges to act as three point fixings as per the three spoke mountings normally used. Difficult to tell from the pics, but you might want to enlarge those holes a bit to ensure the plates don't hit the bolt heads as it flexes.

Just read it through again,Yep can see the larger holes, And yes Olds may be right about bigger holes maybe slot them, The job looks good though.

yes, I have to enlarge those holes a bit more yet, that's a mock up piccy, the rubber apparently never stretches more than 2mm, but the bolt head holes are bigger, and the bolts are threaded into the plates, the thinner plate side will be lock nutted also, thread size is m10 x 1.25.ht bolts its quite heavy, but I don't think it will matter, the rubber unit should last, the one on my car is 10yr old and done 100,00 miles, so should be ok,
