If the carb has not been set up initially try the following ;

Mark one of the flats on the LARGE mixture adjusting nut at the bottom of the carb with a magic marker .
Screw the adjusting nut fully in by using your fingers { count the number of flats on the nut from where it is set now to the fully up position .
Screw back out about 18 to 20 flats or about 3 full turns out
This should be a starting position .

Adjust {You can often just use your fingers only} the LARGE mixture adjusting nut at the carb bottom IN to weaken and OUT to richen .

More info on how to adjust while the engine is running and on setting the choke is on my website at Solution 1

https://sites.google.com/site/fifersrelianthintsandtips/carb-stuff/carb-maintenance/carb-only-runs-with-the-choke-out
.
Are you running the rocker cover breather hose direct to the side tube on the carb .?

Or have you blanked of the side tube on the carb and lead the rocker cover breather hose elsewhere ?

Easiest way to do it  Smiley
Slight problems only occur with the mixture getting oil vapour mixed in if the engine is worn and blowby is taking place .

Take the following info with a pinch of salt Grin Grin Grin Grin

To check for worn engine
Remove the hose from the top of the rocker cover breather .
Place your head EXACTLY 4 feet 4 and 3/4 inches directly above the rocker cover breather vent .
Start the engine .
If your hair is blowing in the wind then the engine is worn
For those , like me  , whose hair has been worn down by years of wearing a motorbike helmet I would recommend wearing a flat cap with a wide brim or a Sherlock Holmes tweed hat

I'm guessing we're talking SU carbs on Reliant engines here?
I usually start at 2 full turns out & go from there.

When you have the basic setting sorted and run the engine fast idle to running temperature, drop the idle as low as pos.
Push up the dash pot piston lift pin (No 24 in the diagram) so it just lifts the piston, if the revs raise and stay there the mixture is to rich, if the engine stalls it’s to weak,  the revs should rise and fall back but not stall. You should then have the correct idle mixture.
