Found out my dad killed a hillman imp at work the other day buy hitting it with a van.

Apparently it used to be the owners dads and he spent 2 years restoring it. The driver got a broken collarbone and dislocated shoulder to boot! 

Did your Dad get the sack? Sacrilege. My Mum used to have a Hillman Imp in aqua marine blue when I were a nipper.

Wanna explain rolled arches to our readers Chris? How'd you do 'em? Ghetto style with a baseball bat?

i used a metal pipe between tyre an arch, this folds the lip up away from tyre, still needs doing more or may cut arches out.

any one got any experiance of removing front springs on a superminx?
do you have to drop bottom wishbone off the ball joint and unbolt anti-roll bar? is the bar easy to bolt back on or a bast.....!?!

no to be honest its years since i did any but yes ther a TW4T  and you have to drop the lower wishbone allthough you can just about do it just with good quality spring compressors but there,s never enough room

its an old mptor so ,,nothing, will undo or come without trouble!!!!!

hi,
spring removal is easy, jack up, put on axle stand under chassis rail, remove wheel.
remove shock absorber, undo antiroll bar bolts and push it outa the way.
undo bottom ball joint, quick tap with hammer releases taper.
put jack under bottom wishbone take weight of spring, undo ball joint nut and remove, lift off hub etc and swing to side(still connected to top joint) then slowly release jack down, remove jack. push bottom wishbone down then just lift spring out.  simples!!!!

So why you removing the springs Chris?

as a short fix i was trying some grayson rubber spring assisters, but they made no difference in height. ::)
got a pair of leaf springs for front, just need to find a tube or beam axle.

got insurance through a different company called cherished vehicle insurance.

any mods(no nos) as long as you tell them, no increase in premium, admin fees etc. :D ;D ;D

That's very impressive Chris. So how did you actually do it? Lots of very careful masking? Free hand, (I'll be super impressed if you did). Nice.

Doesn't look rough to me!

i printed the basic shape, letters etc. cut them out, stuck to car.
drew round with chinograph pencil. then painted by hand the shapes, letters that were left.
seems to have taken forever!!! the black outline was most tricky(guess how i done that?)
been out there this morning finishing off.

for a tv production, there was a real lack of organisation, felt realy amateurish.
even within 1/2hr of start they did'nt know which cars they were going to use!!!
i sat out the way with the mrs and kids drinking coffee.
there were hundreds of people though, screaming an shouting everytime they went live.

I once took a bike along to the local TV studios, (Meridian TV in Berkshire), as part of a MAG interview.
We all stood about for several hours, only for the segment to be dropped at the last minute. I could've been a star!  :(

Why do people think they can write whatever they want online?
Freedom of speech n all that, but you wouldn't walk up to someone in the street & tell 'em their wife's ugly -whether she is or not. Yet they think they can do just that from the anonymity of a keyboard.
I love seeing classics still being used as daily drivers, tatty or concourse condition. Just makes me smile to see them out & about among the boring, lookalike modern stuff.
You could've just cruised in your Minx as it was when you bought it Chris & it would've looked sweet. Some cars, especially modern classics that haven't reached the status of the accepted older models, are starting to get rarer now, so there's a case for preserving those that are left
BUT
the restoration buffs had the same chance as you to buy it & didn't. You did. It's your motor & you can do whatever you want to it. Paint it pink if you like, (though I might not accept a lift in it if you do). Cars should be driven & enjoyed, whether they're fresh out of the showroom or dragged out of a barn -that's the whole point of them isn't it. They've always been modified, from the coach built specials of the 20s & 30s, to the teenager's hatchbacks of today. Customising is about making the vehicle yours, adding your personality to it. Wouldn't it be boring if everyone liked the same things.
A Hillman's an intriguing choice for the gasser treatment & I'm curious to see how it evolves. Go for it, but please, really go for it! It needs more ...oomph. More of everything. Gassers should be big & bold & crazy, but a lot of that could still be done on a budget. Jack it up another foot off the ground, polished Wolfies or Cragars, the biggest, stoopidest motor you can wedge in it, open fender headers, a tube front axle, strip the interior except for the period dashboard, 2 60s race seats, a roll cage, coloured perspex windows, big, bright graphics -a road going drag car.
-but that's just my opinion.  ;D
Ignore the detractors mate & enjoy your car.  ;)

I'd love to fit Jaz bucket seats to Taz's Charger, Charlie, but I'm not allowed. Something about it being her car, not mine.  :P  There was a pair at the NSRA swapmeet back in the Spring for 40 quid. Should've just bought them & bolted them into her rolling shell & waited for her to notice.  ;D
Considering we cut my 1953 Ford in half vertically and horizontally, then threw most of it away, I'm not really in a position to comment on preserving classics!

Front screen has to be 80% clear, and i think the sides are 65% but i'm not wholly certain,, when i went to court, i took loads of paperwork with me regarding Florida tint laws cos that's where the car came from, the Magistrate looked at my homework and threw the case out of court,,,, however, he did rape me for doing 58 in a 30...

Couldn't you make orange Perspex inserts for the inside of the windows, so normal driving, clear windows, and at shows/private ground insert orange for full effect!!!

going to keep stock front suspension for now, so brake upgrade needed, had these for my pop so thought
as minx is ford pattern i'll make some adaptors up for calipers and have vented discs upfront.

I like the bench best but i guess with the extra poke you will get from the new engine you might end up sliding around  :)

Yeah Chris! Just a pair of race buckets up front, weld up the rear doors, 'flaked vintage open face helmet hung from the cage, a pair of race slicks & a wheel brace sat where the rear seat used to be, ala "Two Lane Black Top", white fenderwell headers, cherry red candyapple paint, metalflake the inside of the roof? Big, bold & loud -not so much in yer face as slapped round the head. You know it makes sense!  ;D

They don't make cars like that any more, that's when cars were cars, they had character. Even if you dint like certain makes you could appreciate the workmanship that went into them. I was a 1600E man, had about 3 1600E and about 14 Mk2 Corrina's was in the 1600E club for about 6 years before i got marred. So i know what your feeling for the car,good luck with it and enjoy it.

gearbox is a bit high and back about 5"

g/box could do with going forward about 1/2 to3/4 of an inch  make the tail shaft seal last longer  ;)

some metal work cut out, gearbox lowered and moved back, plenty of room for rad & fan.
bench seat can stay! ;D

engine removed, now fitting springs and beam, then back on its wheels for engine& box fitting.

apparently i'm not allowed to work on it on christmas day!!! :o ::)

this is where i'm upto at present, bit of tidying on front shackles(modified ford pop) still to make rear mounts but slowly getting there, hope to have it back down on its wheels by the new year!!!!

lovely place in middle of no where, timber cottage lovely place surrounded by woodland.

anyone ever welded a pitman arm? :o ::) :-\ ???

I seem to have spent my life cutting things up with hacksaws & only fairly recently switched to using a cutting disc on an angle grinder -saves a hell of a lot of time & effort, but creates so much mess! Now I permanently smell of grinding dust.
Pitman arms are usually cast aren't they. I can never remember -can you weld a casting, but not a forging, or the other way round?

I started with files n hacksaws then grinding discs and now lasers! I wonder what's next? :)

Usually a press fit -the ends of the studs are splined to grip the hole as they're pressed in.
I'd recommend SpeedShack in London for replacement studs

nope, they were bought for the buick v6 that i did'nt get.

Gonna paint them white? Seems to be the traditional colour.

they're not long enough, and there a strange size, 5/16 something or other.

i'm putting 7/16" studs in.

laid under hillman today getting burnt erm no welding!!!
rear spring hangers finished and painted, gearbox x-member finished and painted.
engine out next for a clean up&paint. finish welding in engine bay then a splash of paint.

thats a ,cologne, v6  the dizzy is at the rear of the engine   essex v6,s had the dizzy at the front,

both ford and mopar used a simaler blue

i've got clearence issues on my beam axle fitted to my hillman, fitted 15" minx steels and they hit the trackrod ends, even with longer studs and spacers.
i'm guessing austin 10's were fitted with 16 or 17's

found a home for the alternator, just need to finish the brackets.
moved horns further under the wing, then moved battery tray across from other side, to allow room for remote servo on drivers side. refitted rad in original position(as steering box now removed) moved washer bottle and pump to drivers side as well. worked out what parts i need to finish the exhausts.
still a big list of stuff to do.

i've got nylon fuel pipe, rubber for ends, clips etc so i can run them in(feed & return)
think the manual box will go back in, also got the rear axle to change so lots to do!!!

well, looks like me happy pills are reacting with the antibiotics i'm taking, not been to work since last thursday,

saturday we removed rear axle, got new one lined up under the springs, pat then got everything set in position only to tell me sunday that the car now sits level!!! with sills sitting 16" from the floor!!!, so he then removed it and mounted on top of springs. looks like i'll have to make some more extended shackles as the ones of the back are now on front!!!

sorted the rad out(new larger one) along with a leccy fan.

5 speed manual looks like its going back in.

no pics, but hopefully will saturday.

yep thanks to club hero Pat,even had bacon rolls saturday!!! i supplied the cakes!!! (bakery 100yds away from our house ;D)

had a good day on the minx. rear shackles fitted, engine in, engine out remove gearbox, free siezed clutch, back together and back in car, clutch works ok, check propshaft, oh s**te 2" short!!! a few other bits planned out.

front shackles redrilled to bring front up higher!!!, part of steering done, engine & gearbox mounts all finally tightened.
i'm trying to get a small(as in size) alternator, plus waiting on convaluted rad hose.

steering is being set up at moment, extended shackles being given to pat tomorrow so he can carry on, we can also set castor angle as well.

we got a few jobs done, strengthening plates welded into bulkhead for pedal assembly and servo/master cylinder with me on fire watch inside. fitted new rear  brake shoes(not got drums yet) propshaft fitted front and back,
i finished centre mounting once i got home.

yes andy. we thought this way was better/easier than trying to weld up in the prop tunnel.

good tip i picked up many moons ago cut a sponge to suit the hole needed, put powder or any other dry coloured stuff you have lying around(must be dry so it doesnt seep through and in to the carb) on one end of said sponge then place on top of carb, carfully shut bonnet, when opened you will have your hole marked, piolot drill the centre and shut the bonnet to check the pilot hole is center in the carb the hole saw to the correct size, hey presto ;)

pat is finishing servo/b/cylinder mountings during week. that leaves me steering to re-assemble, clutch cable to refit, fit all new brake lines, bleed etc. finish/tidy wiring, refill g/box an axle with oil. fit airfilter(new carb base to make) cut hole in bonnet(if not enough clearence) fit radiator, pipe work etc. check for leaks then get her running!!!!

so not much!!!, realy need to get that lot done by next week end!!! as got to get mot, and a shake down run if possible to our show at a local air museum on the 19th august!!!!

as you can see pat is cracking on with the paint, having to remove all the grey & redoxide that some prat brushed on!!!  :unsure:

todays progress was brakes all plumbed in(need longer front flexis though) clutch cable fitted, steering shaft fitted. does'nt sound a lot but nothing went to plan or as straight forward as it should of been. got a list of stuff to get, but jobs list is(hopefully) getting shorter.

door repairs all done,
big pile of parts building up at home!!! no car playing this weekend.
got a pair of electric cooling fans, an engine steady bar(as she rocked a bit on start up), door to glass seals plus clips, heater pipe reducer and heater pipe, correct size brake pipe p clips.
just waiting for flexi coolant rad pipe.
shopping tomorrow for aluminuim flat bar for rad top supports and aluminium angle for bonnet scoop fixing. also panel wipe.
going to have a go at bending/melting plexiglass for scoop tomorrow, yes i have done it before, curved screens on boats.

well i've had a go at making the hood scoop out of perspex,
i've made plenty of boat screens outa perspex heating and bending.

How do you heat it Chris?

a heat gun, but you have to be real carefull not to burn it, at work we use a parafin space heater.
i cramp a piece of hard wood each side, then heat close to the wood, it takes a while but once heated bends real easy.(and breaks when cold!!! twat ::) why did i try to bend it a little more!!!!)

5mm is here, think i'll wait until friday to have a go!!!

pat who is doing most of work is having trapped nerve problems(in his neck, not nice), so things are going a bit slower.

I fully sympathise with Pat. After years of trapped nerves in the lumbar region i now suffer with the same in my neck, this is the reason I can`t get anyone to employ me properly these days. Can`t guarantee to be fit for work from one day to the next. Give him my sympathies.

will do cabman, he's done a little more and says he's feeling a little better. i've got most parts now to finish the mechanicals. got to order top coat.

a little progress, got a throttle pedal that makes the carby thing move, engine can have a drink of anti-freeze next week as all hoses are connected at last, got battery tray 80% fabbed. pat has been rubbing more paint off!!! sorry no pics

 You are missing nothing this time of year, this way of life is a pleasure thats my philosophy, and crawling about in sub zero temps in an electricaly lit dungeon is done during times of nessesaty not pleasure. The odd warm day will get you on it to do little detail bits perhaps interior stuff, leave the paint untill the wather breaks if you can. It wil be a beautifull spring this year and a beautifull summer just like my allter ego odsball off kellys heroes drink wine and chese and pozitive vibes man.  ;D

if it was in my garage i'd leave it a month or two, but being at someone else's who needs the undercover storage it'll have to be worked on through wind, snow sun and rain.

back onto the minx, i have got a speedo cable now.

There's been a Nissan Figaro sat in a parking space on my postal delivery for a couple of years now. Yesterday there was a Dutch registered car & trailer loading it up & taking it away. Quite sought after little cars I think, (Kapri has one). Are they based on the Micra?
Where'd you get the speedo cable from Chris? I've got to get one for my Pop, to hook up the Borg Warner gearbox to the Morris Oxford speedo. It's a Smiths speedo, so I'm hoping I can have it re-calibrated.

Andy, speedy cables will make you one to suit gearbox and speedo.. and a guy in Tonbridge does all this speedo calibration malarky as well, he is going to do my Pop speedo for me..

Is he any good? I know Speedy recalibrate too, but no idea what it costs.

It's the cold weather apparently, they were saying about this on TV the other day - your body has to use more energy to keep warm so it's difficult to spare enough for doing other stuff - it's a fact!

I cant be bothered when its like this, its not nice working on a cold metal object in frigid temperatures. Its for pleasure the hobby if you got no deadline to meet relax and wait for the weather to break, its supposed to be getting warmer this next week i was told today.  8)

I've got a deadline to get my truck finished & it's coming up pretty fast. So I've got no choice but to put in a couple of hours on it every day.
Definitely takes a lot of the fun out of it when it starts feeling like a second job, but if I don't do it now, I won't be driving it for the Summer.
Spanners, I'm wearing the boiler suit you gave me last year every day now. Layers are the key -lots of layers of clothing to trap warm air & insulate you from the cold -or just work on your vehicles in the Summer.

fit weather seals to door glass,
new wipers,
engine x-member,
engine steady bar,
gear stick surround,
bleed brakes,
make and fit bonnet scoop,
set caster to front axle,
tracking,
engine tune up,
mot!!!!

when you see it in a list yes!!!
theres a few on there that are easy 5min jobs, engine x-member and steady bar will take a bit longer!!!
 

minx is coming home, could be this week or next, i can then easily finish the jobs left to do. hope to have it on road within the next 6-8 weeks.(or sooner!!!)

well the person who's going to pick the minx up is the same person to do the mot.
will ask him if exhaust is too loud!!!! plus a few other bits and pieces, like scoop, sharpe edges etc.

i went in with plug number so no messing about.

not much done today, plugs changed, reset points, runs like a sack of s**t when it does start. think starter is buggered.
need to get it running then time it up. the motor is still realy an unknown.
i did get some primer on the back end.

fitted bumper, boot lock, number plate and hillman name which involved drilling holes out to accept the special plastic plugs.

starter was serviced and  new solenoid fitted, not fitted yet but great service and even better price.(£43!!!)

I had mine rebuilt for the Rover engine in my Pop. When we went for the first SVA test, Kev had to climb underneath & short across the 2 terminals with a screwdriver to get the thing started -the resultant showers of sparks didn't go down too well with the examiners.
Turned out half the brushes were missing.

starter fitted, slight adjustment on distributor, turn key, few turns she starts an sits there running on choke. just need to beg borrow or steal a timing light now to set her up a bit better. get her turned round tomorrow,will then let her warm up an see how she is off choke.

got the minx out this morning, took it down the road and turned round which was fun with only handbrake!!! engine ran a lot better, but a right job gettin it back into garage!!!

Put some topcoat in with your primer mix and dust over again Chris . If you leave it in primer it'll suck in moisture which will come back to haunt you when you topcoat .

 i got me engine steady bar made an painted, ready to be fitted when dry, onto wiring fans now, switches, fuses, relays!!!.............................arhh!!  lol 

I know absolutely nuffink about wiring. Glad to hear the engine problems weren't terminal though. Onwards!

fans wired, relays and fuses all connected, flick the switch it lights up and fans work yeehah!!!! :D
bolted up the engine steady bar as well,

not cleaned anything, just put things back as they layed on back seat!!!
had to fill lots of holes, and changed shape of gearstick.
i would like to have new carpets but budget won't stretch at moment.

going to put a bigger throttle pedal in as my boot nearly goes over the top!!!

had a little time on it tonight, connected some wires up, changed a fuse and i've got all electrics working apart from main beam on one headlight which happens to be a sealed beam. amazing everything worked though!!!

not much progress tonight as did'nt get to do any work till nearly 8pm so could'nt make much noise. got cowling fitted round steering column, which was lucky it fitted as its at a different angle,  sorted steel out for brake flexi supports, and hunted for washer bottle holder without success. also found out i've got wrong wiper blades, they don't fit onto the arms, but i've got a plan to get over that(fingers crossed) as they're stainless an not cheap.

Getting there though Chris.

well i made some noise tonight, front brake hose brackets made, also managed to fit some bump stops(mot requirment?) not that the springs will ever hit them!!! then gave everything a coat of paint, starting to look like the elephant man due to an absus at  front off me mouth so not much else done as in a little pain!!!!!!!!!!!!! dentist first thing in morning.

tomorrow i should hopefully get brake lines connected and stick some fluid in an have a little bleed ing fun!!!

felt like crap all day after visit to dentist,
went into garage not feeling my best.
put brake pipes all together, set up the easi-bleed, fill everything up with fluid,

then went round and bled brakes twice, nice hard pedal, started her up, pedal went down a little as it should with a servo, still a good pedal.

next step is water pump.

just spent a few hours in garage, drilled them out and saved the threads on all, mostly by luck!!!
got some off it back together, need some extra bolts before i can see if its leak free.
