Title: What you got in your garden?
Post by: tazet on June 11, 2008, 04:48:24 PM
Thought we would start a thread where people can put photos of stuff and wildlife in your gardens.

This morning, (sorry no photos) we saw a mummy Woodpecker feeding her baby, a duck and I fed it park style. Throwing bread at it  ;D and various other birds.
I also picked my first home grown strawberry

Then sat and watched the birds.

As I'm sat here Dave keeps popping out to have a munch. Mum thinks he is a Wood Mouse but I'm not sure. He's tiny and a brown colour with very small ears and very dark brown nose, ears and huge eyes. Every morning we get Squirrels visiting and they are funny to watch them playing. This morning when manky woke there were 2 Squirrels in the bird food and a Duck on the floor quite happily munching away  ;D

I'm sure you have some wonderful stuff you just don't see it. You have your cats and if you got a bird feeder, (out of moggy reach) you's see the birds too. You'll be supprised what is out there if you look long enough. I get to see this stuff as I smoke and I go outside for my ciggies so my laptop goes with me and I just sit and watch the world go by with one eye and the other watching you lot  ;D Wildlife everywhere  ;D

;D See we don't have a hedgehog that does that. That's quite cool you'll have to try and get a photo of it. In the 5 years or so I've been here I've only ever seen one and that was after Manky moved in.

We had Starlings as they had made a nest in our roof. The mummy was quite funny to watch and used to throw tantrums if there were not mealworms for her  ;D They's all gone now and is very quiet in the garden.

I woke up one night to a lot of noise and rushed outside thinking there were a couple of dogs having a fight in our garden.

There weren't - and all I can say is, in answer to the age-old question "How do hedgehogs make love?" the answer is, very VERY loudly !!!!!!!

we dont have a garden a such but the other day we were woken up a 6 by a very strange noise , lots of thumping, screeming a screetching ( put your dirty minds away ) turns out our indoor cat had managed to get hold of a blackdird and if its possible he actually looked like he was showing it off to us in a "look at what i got kindo way" . its ok though when i jump up he let it go and i managed to get it back out of a window, we can only think it had been in the flat for a couple of days as we hadnt had the windows open ( it get cold up here in scotland ) .

Just now I was sat in the garden going through Janie and Rick's photos from today and heard a very loud noise. Looked up to see that there was a huge hot air balloon. Think it landed nearby as it was getting lower as it went overhead.

We seem to have an awful lot of mice in our garden.  Well I wouldn't mind if they were in the garden but the cats keep bringing them in, then I have to rescue them and let them loose under the shed where the cats can't go!

Title: Re: What you got in your garden?
Post by: tazet on June 15, 2008, 10:19:58 PM
Funny you shoud say that so do we. I've notice loads of holes in the flower beds and raised areas on the lawn where they tunnel along but they sometimes venture into the house by themselves, (no help of a cat). I do have an electronic zapper to get them. I don't mind them in the garden but NOT in the house. Our mice learn the hard way.

Again, not quite in the garden, but at the end of our road. Nipped out for a jacket spud & a drink at Newlands Corner at lunchtime. A local beauty spot, popular at weekends with bikers & classic car guys.
Very peaceful during the week, although there were still a dozen or so bikes there. Nice view.

I would love to have some Reds here but as you say the grey ones chase them away. We sat for ages watching a baby squirrel trying to eat from the feeder and it was so funny as he was just a bit too small to reach but he had a good go and got there in the end. I was crying it was so funny. He wasn't at all phased by Manky and I being there.

Brock, you've gotta get the hang of posting pics mate.
Another on Steve's behalf:

Not quite in the garden but not far from the shed. Are they the most giganticist poppys in the world? Unfortunately the flowers have all fallen off in the last day or so but they were quite impressive.

Post by: brock on July 04, 2008, 07:39:35 AM
not a particularly interesting photo without the flowers but they are big, there is a bit of a raised bank thing in there but it's not quite three feet high and the plants are better than ten foot on top of that.
I should point out that Mrs. "B" is shown for purposes illustrative of scale only and no warranties are expressed, nor should they be implied as to her fitness for purpose or suitability as opium warlord

This morning we woke up to the Jackdaws and a squirrel raiding the bird food. We used to have loads of feeders but the Jackdaws have become a bit of a pest so we have removed the big feeders and we mix the different food stuffs into a tub and only put a couple of scoops out at a time so the little birds get something to eat. We looked out the window to see the tub on it's side with it's contents all over the patio and a very greedy squirrel happily stuffing it's face. Judging by the size of his tummy he was a very full little bugger when he ran waddled off.

They are Ring Necked Parakeets. We have a very small family living on the estate. Some counties there are so many they outnumber pigeons and are classed as pests but here they are brilliant and don't bother anyone. We love seeing them in the garden.

Back again today. Only about 15 feet away from the back door but moving too fast to get a decent photo. Also had a Nuthatch on the feeder, plus a dozen pheasants wandering around at the bottom of the garden.

:) No stalking necessary here -they just help themselves from the bird food storage tub. We've got a tame pheasant called Fred who comes to the back door & taps on it to be fed. I think word's gotten round that we're open 24 hours & free!
