Hi Chris,
Some very useful photos there. If you've looked at my Pop build thread here or in the Motors, 4 wheels section of the main site, you'll see I'm way behind you, but kinda heading in the same direction.
I've just decided to go for a new box section chassis from Valley Gas Speed Shop. Just a basic rectangle of the right length & width in heavy guage box with the necessary kick up at either end to accomodate the low ride height I'm after. I'm keeping the original Pop bonnet top panel & grille but leaving the sides open like yours. I suggested to Jimmy at Valley Gas that we could move the standard Pop beam out from under the chassis & mount it on a perch, but he thouught it'd make the nose too long & out of proportiion. Looks like it works on yours though, so I'll be showing him the photos of yours when I go back.
I think I may be contacting you to pick your brains on a regular basis!
Oh, & welcome to the site by the way!  ;D

And I thought my Pop was taking a long time!
So can I shove the front beam out front on a perch, ahead of the engine & still use the standard Pop bonnet panels & grille?

The Flintstones are too clever for me. :P
I'll be paying you a visit tomorrow Mr Lunatic. Got your rent money, but also need to take a few measurements for the new chassis.  ;)
Chris, I'd imagined the motor would end up buried in the bulkhead, with the driver sitting in the back seat. Looking at yours, not so. Good job too cos I won't be able to move the seats in mine!
A question- what's the measurement from ...I dunno, the front edge of the door, to the centre of the front spring hanging cross member?

Title: Re: prepop
Post by: poprodder on January 31, 2008, 09:25:35 PM

The cross member's 4 miles away from the bulkhead?!
No wonder the engine fits so easily.

there was going to be a pop with fenders at the bottom of the yard...............still fenderless as things did'nt go as planned!!!
its now got ifs at front but still wingless, still prepop as well.

no pics as it was dark when i finished, kept me out of the house full of kids mind(nearly! still all here!!! >:( ) bloody noise.

Post by: Manky Monkey on July 18, 2009, 09:48:36 PM
Huh?
So you've swapped the front suspension? And plan to fit the original Prefect or Pop fenders?
I'm still intrigued & demand piccies!

If you're looking for Prefect & Pop info or parts, give Tino's Rod & Kustom a ring. He's the guy making a set of stainless headers for my Pop. He has a bit of a thing for Prefects -the cars, not 6th formers. I think. Got several in his workshop & yard, plus at least one Pop. Nice guy.

Woke up late this morning -a rare chance for a lie-in, so decided to give it a miss & spend some quality time in the shed with me hacksaw. Awww, so cute!
How much support have you got under the floor panels Chris? Mine's just a big space where the floor should be at the moment, but I've been wondering how many cross braces it needs. Don't want the floor sagging or fatiguing till my feet fall through. Will they all stay as seperate panels or are you welding some together? How you fixing them down? -just stealing ideas for my own.  ;)

Title: Re: Prepop **update**
Post by: poprodder on September 26, 2009, 07:08:59 PM
hi,
he's not called cute very often, but does turn his head side to side when you talk to him.

theres 4 x-members under the floor.
i hope it'll be supported enough, the steel is 1.5mm thick. used 4 cutting discs!!!
going to drill and plug weld then seal both sides(joints etc) with polyurethane mastic (perks of being a boat builder!! ;) )
thought about fitting 12mm plywood on top but think it could be overkill!!!

cheers chris.

theres an up date!!! but it involved spending money!!!
i'd dropped my triumph front hubs off with kris brown at the nats in august.
got a call yesterday to say they were ready, would i like them sent.
had a nice chat with kris, said he'd send hubs today as it was too late today(15.00 yesterday)
had a box arrive today at work, yep kris had done the impossible!!!

heres some pics.

chevy stud pattern
(http://media6.dropshots.com/photos/525029/20091015/163605.jpg)

triumph hubs converted to five stud, adds about 10mm per side on track.

amazing the amount of work involved.

been thinking about my wheels, pop will be used all year round, think i'll need a set of winter wheels, so morris fronts(already got so no problem) just need to find some rears, 4.5 on 4 stud or 4.5 on 5 stud( yes i've a choice!!!) 6" wide plus
anyone got any ideas, i've got rover 800 15" steels which i could modify but not keen on it.

no progress, but big problems thanks to neighbours >:( >:( >:(
i was starting to put up some light tubes due to not being able to see in the dark, was stapling
wire to roof beams when next door pops there head over wall and asks if i'm qualified to do wiring?!!!
i said no but getting leccy in to finish off an connect(bit of a lie but needed to get rid of them)
these lights are just being joined into a junction box on the lighting circuit in sunroom/garage.
got a call today from the mrs saying council building inspector has been calling.

I love the wheels but unfortunately wouldn't suit my build. Have you tried other websites like the NSRA or Mopar guys?
Maybe it's fate that you haven't sold the Pop though Chris. I think you'd regret it once the Spring arrives. If you can afford to store it for a few months, you might find that building bug again. Even if it becomes a long term project with you just going out there once a month & plugging away at it, it's bought & paid for & not costing you anything. Perhaps you just need a break from it for a while.

Title: Re: pop
Post by: poprodder on January 01, 2010, 11:01:43 PM
hi everyone,

well i've been tinkering on the pop, i was going to change the 4 speed manual box to a 4speed auto due to slack in the gearchange.
after measuring i've found it will take major surgery to chassis to get it to fit so thought i'd invsetigate the slackness :o

a little bit of surgery on trans tunnel.

i found that there was a spacer missing so bottom of gear stick was to tight, put some washers under which sloved it a little
then found lots of movement in selector rod, so slid a piece of stainless tube over it which seems to have cured it.

these problems have all happened due to the selector rod and aluminium housing being shortened.

just need to weld tunnel back together.

the front will be a wider track so maybe they will look ok.
i always think a pop looks to narrow at the rear so maybe they'll be ok.

Hi Chris. Good to see you're still in there tinkering mate.
Hard to gauge the wheel thing without being able to stand back & view the whole car, but look O.K to me. Just fit wider arches!
I've got an auto box in my own Pop project. Praying it works O.K cos I really don't want to go pulling it to bits.

hi andy,
thanks,
not runnin arches so thats not a problem.
good luck with auto box as they don't like sitting about for too long, as in really don't!!!
i'll have to find another project for mine to go in!!! ;) or sell as it'll fit onto a rover engine with
all the parts i've got even though it came outa a jag!!!

i'm guessing this is correct.

they do different bore sizes, mines 20mm, thought the 4 hole fixing would be stronger and spread the load further.

well its still here!!! my god theres some tossers about wanting nothing but to waste ya time >:( ::)

looks like i'll have to finish pop.

first i've refitted rear wheels and love the placing of these in the wheel well.
prefer them to the chrome cragers.

also got an idea for exhaust,i know it'll be noisy but do you think they'll look ok?
the 90' pipe will follow the cuvre better(maybe 135' pipe)
the 2" straight pipe has a silencer inside it.

the only part you'll see is where pipe sticks out where the 90' bit is,the rest will be covered.

hi andy,

a local bloke who moves a lot of our club cars.
