Title: What's Happening with Mankymonkey?
Post by: stinkey on August 08, 2019, 06:26:44 AM
Hiya guys just a question really?  It's gone REALLY quite on here as of late?  Nobody is posting stuff, no pictures? Are we all too busy? Have we all gone on holiday?
I'd post pictures but I can't find a decent App for my tablet that's easy to use?  (Down Sizer) and it's got to be simple because I don't understand technology in regards to computers or phones?  :o and I have tried loads of apps in an attempt to post? 🤬 :D

Im doing bits, but my health has taken a knock at present. I'll ask my friend who is an Apple guru about apps for resizing. My new iphone gives an automatic choice of sizes but the ipad doesnt.

Yes, it's gone quiet, but I can't force people to post if they don't want to.
Any suggestions?

Not doing anything vehicle related (though I have bought a Yank as my daily) due to a combination of too much to do around the cottage and neck problems limiting movement.
Trike has run out of MOT and bikes have not been ridden since moving here.  :'(

I'm still building my Pop, but progress is slow & not very photo worthy. There don't seem to be so many projects on the go these days.
Unfortunately the guy who was going to rebuild the website for me died a couple of weeks ago, (Simon Pollock). I got a quote from a commercial Web company a couple of years ago -they wanted 1 1/2 grand to build a very, very basic version of the site.

Imminent wedding!

Congrats Archie. If you've already had the wedding, I hope it went well and if not, have a super day and really enjoy it. Either way, post a couple of pics of you in your finery. You're a handsome lad and I need cheering up!  ;) :D

Is there a honeymoon?

I will hazard a guess Mr M, excellent site though it is, the clientele are getting old!!....older :o, less endeavour, me, probably the last throw of the projects dice was my three wheeler, so, difficult. we need some young blood I fear. Who knows, in a while things may pick up, although I fear a drift downwards as of now. don't mean to be negative but I have seen it happen with many forms of Car/ motorcycling clubs etc. over my lifetime, but hey, what do I know! so I'll just carry on listening to Eddy Cochrane  whilst typing this load of old drivel, ;D... Stinkey, I have used PC's and laptops etc for 25 years, and never found the need to "keep in touch" via any " social media" sites, social bloody media, now there's a contradiction in terms if ever I saw one, and I can just hear the howls of indignation from the twitter, Face Book, and myriad of other clones of the same ilk, but bugger it, do I need a system that encourages outrages like self harming, bullying, etc, etc, by faceless punters, hiding behind their on-line personas, on....." social media", I think not, so.....yep, I also believe it has an input into the demise of such valuable outlets as this site, well there you go, Morrag. ps. does anyone pick up a phone, send an "E" mail, or, God forbid, talk face to face anymore! ??? ???

I haven't been on for quite awhile  but don't do that much online elsewhere either . Still got the trike and finally got it MOTd insured and back on the road last week with a bit of a makeover .

Health set me back as I tore the muscle from the bone( rotator cuff ) when refitting the engine ( and I was only being foreman!!).

Also had a major stroke Valentines day  followed by a quick heart attack in April and stents fitting.

So mostly been spending time getting myself is some form of order.

Trikes amazing to drive with new engine and further tuning mods to the Reliant lump !!

Only done 25 miles on it and still working out if riding it regularly is feasible or if I'll have to sell still. Still makes me smile like an idiot when I take it out though!! LOL

Kapri, if you can financially warrant it! keep it if only to polish and look at! ;D really, the psychological lift has to be worth it. Hornet, my most used bike is also an SV, brilliant piece of kit, up there with the best of bikes I have owned, and I have had a few believe me :D, so we shall have to see what is feasible, ok, Morrag

Hey, there is still life out there in Manky Land! :)
Hi chaps, nice to know you're still about.
I admit I'm on Facebook too, as are most people here I think. It's an easy way to keep in touch with those elsewhere -I chat to my sister in Canada through Facebook Messenger & have just arranged my next trip to the States through a mate in the Bronx, as well as keeping up with friends from my distant past. There's a lot of cross-overs on the 'net, but most of my vehicle related posts are here, rather than elsewhere.
Our forum membership & number of posts fluctuates all the time for no particular reason. Sometimes it's quiet, sometimes not. As long as you want it though, it'll be here :)

hiya kev good to hear your still about..can I ask what tuning mods you have done with the reliant engine?  I took mine to Airey tuning last year and he did an amazing job but be nice to give it more oomph 👍👍

Hi Steve , usual stuff really I ported all the head and deshrouded valves in chamber . That alone makes a HUGE difference as the head in standard form is more or less two big chaneeles drilled in with 90 degreee bends etc. I rang it like that initially with the bike carbs and it was quick. However mixture was out and it bore washed in a short time.

Next I converted to a single 34ICH Weber on a stock manifold with Rebel Racing internal mods and port matched the gaskets . I had to make an adapter for the carb as it fouled on the tank so there is now a highrise manifold as well also all ported to match carb and inlet.

Finally I ported the standard exhaust manifold  and made a new exhaust using 1.5" bore pipe and opened up the Reliant flange which is ridiculously restrictive. All going through a single megaphone mounted on the side near my kneecap .

Sounds like an old 4 cylinder bike on tickover . I've got a video but no idea ho wto get it on here ?

Totally mild mannered up to 3000 rpm, then all hell breaks loose. Pulls like an absolute train quicker than I can shift gears. Due to the overall gearing it's faster in 3rd than top ( pulls to about 90 when I backed off ) and maxes out about 80mph.

Sounds good, I have a spare engine I'd maybe like to rebuild and tune up?  At least give me something to tinker with on a cold winter night 👍😎🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿what gearing are you using in the rear end?  And tyre size?

Title: Re: What's Happening with Mankymonkey?
Post by: Manky Monkey on August 21, 2019, 08:28:36 PM
Sounds very similar performance to my last trike Kev -the engine's now in the final one I built which is now owned by BayChimp. I had it tuned by Tom Airey, but as you say, the standard exhaust ports are way out of line. I used a tubular exhaust manifold bought from Ebay which made a huge difference.
I think the overall rolling diameter of the rear wheels/tyres was around 24" which gave the same effect as yours - 4th gear becomes more of an overdrive for motorway cruising. It'd sit at 70-80mph all day, but wasn't much fun on motorways -like driving an old Mini - they're much more at home on A roads where you can work up & down through the gears & enjoy the twisty bits, rather than motorway mile munching.
I quite miss mine.

Post by: stinkey on August 22, 2019, 06:49:43 AM
Yes Andy put me in touch with Tom 👍 he certainly knows his stuff..my rear tyres are actually too tall so need the gears changing unless I can get some lower profile tyres to fit 10x15 rims?   I dread motorway driving and always try to use the country roads

Riding's much more enjoyable on non-motorway roads anyway!

My modern VW campervan always wants to go faster than the speed limit on the motorway but I still choose non motorway routes wherever possible.

I've definitely slowed up in my old age -or middle age at least. Quite happy bimbling along at less than the speed limit -it's a maximum speed, not compulsory. When my Pop's on the road, I don't drive it any faster than I drive my little commuter car.

Haven't been on MMM for a few weeks so late to this thread but I'm not into Facebook, Twitter etc. I mainly use WhatsApp, e-mail and phone plus the very occasional letter, yes real ones, on paper that you post. Ask Andy and Baychimp.  ;D

I did do Facebook about 10 years ago to keep in touch with 2 mates and the various events we used to go to but I got sick to death of all the friends of friends links I kept getting. I kept the account but very rarely go on there but all that time ago I set up an email notification that went straight into a folder. A year ago I was tidying my email. Looked in the folder only to find about twenty thousand unread emails.  :o Understandable considering my one mate posted at least 20 times a day! Just think of all the time I saved not reading them.  :)

It would be a shame if MMM went down the Facebook route as, many other groups have. At least this way anyone with access to a computer/tablet/smartphone can join in without being hassled by unwanted stuff. Plus like we all agree, this site stays very friendly and upsets have been very rare.   8)

Well I'm in South West Wales, near the Preseli Hills - very near actually, walked up on of the smallest yesterday.
So mid West Wales is like Aberystwyth, Morrag somewhere near Gower?

I was in Wales towards the end of August. Took my Mum up. She lived between Aberystwyth and Aberaeron for about 25 years until about 8 years ago. We stayed a few days in Aber visiting her friends around that area then drove home via the A487 cutting over to Carmarthen to see my Brother. Also visited my old house nr Carmarthen on the way which I left nearly 20 years ago. I had a lovely big spa bath put in when I lived there. We even moved a wall to fit it. As we pulled up outside, my lovely bath was dumped outside the house. I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry!  :'(   :D

I didn't think I'd visit that way again but it was nice going over the mountains (we went via Leintwardine in N Herefordshire). It was very hot and there were loads of bikes about especially around Rhayader where there are some lovely sweeping roads.

We used to love driving around your way, very pretty. I think the A487 is a great road, all the way to the A40 with so many lovely places veering off it. We'd often spend a day and do the circular route and loop back to Carmathen via Synod Inn, Fishguard, Milford Haven, Pembroke and Tenby or variations of that route. Such great roads and beautiful scenery, well minus the oil refinery!  :-\ Haven't the stacks just been demolished? Bet it looks strange now after them being there for so long. Do you ever go that way?

So all that time ago, I might have even been past your house (assuming you were there then  :D). I didn't realise Morrag is in the Gower. We loved it around there too. As for Hornet, we used to live in the same place and go to school together! I've been about these past two months. I was even near Merv I think recently. I stayed in a hotel in Quedgeley because I was meeting people in Painswick. Perhaps he'll let me know. Small world.  8)   :)

P.S. Biker Gran, I know you mentioned the Google Map recently but I can't remember if you said it still exists or not. Can you let me know please.

Might as well.  Actually there are two of them, haven't tried the original one cos we couldn't update it anyway, that's why I started the new one.

Just checked and the old ones still there but it's so out of date and we can't update it, Tazet used to do that.

I,m , still about , ;D
Been struggling one a bit  , just me and Mr,Bon the rescued Belgian malinois  I took on , living out in the Yorkshire countryside , , not the best of weather for anything

But had near a dozen projects on the go over the last 12 months ,

Not been posting on here as I got the impression that I wasn,t as welcome as I once was , :-\

I can,t resize pics to post on this site
But if anybody on messenger can , I will send a few and would be grateful if they could be posted on here for others to see
Then it shows that I,m not always asleep all the time  ;)
Also I need guidance and input to keep things going

Cheers
