Title: Northern Monkey
Post by: Manky Monkey on March 09, 2019, 06:50:39 PM
Well, just for the weekend.
I drove over to Lincolnshire this morning to see a mate about making a custom aluminium fuel tank for my Pop, (I'm not happy with the rear tank -fittings in the wrong positions & I just want something prettier if it's going to be on show. Still powder coated black though).
From there I drove up the East coast to Billingham, near Middlesbrough to pick up a spare Ford Pop steering box, column & wheel I bought on eBay -the seller turned out to own a drag car that used to race with my brother's club, The Wild Bunch.
I was going to drive straight home from there, but thought it's my long weekend off work, I don't have to go back to work until Tuesday -why not make a weekend of it.
So I stopped off at a steam railway in Grosmont for the afternoon & now I'm sat in a very nice hotel in Whitby, East Yorkshire.
Just about to wander down to the quayside for a fish & chip supper, then back to wallow in a hot bath while listening to the funk & soul show on Radio 6 in the hotel.
*sigh* Life is good :)

We were up in Yorkshire years for a weekend with the Maestro Owners Club, ans as it was so far we made a week of it - had a wonderful time in spite of camping in awful weather.

We went to Grosmont and were lucky enough to see FIVE engines in steam all at the same time, what a sight!

Sadly, I'm a couple of weeks too early for steam -they don't start running the trains till the end of March, but I had a mooch along the platform & in the engine sheds, as well as a slice of Victoria sponge cake in the cafe :)

Andy , when you took the photo of the signal with the clock underneath it you were probably seen by lots of  people as there is a webcam on that signal gantry facing you running 24/7, there is another one at Goathland station also known as Aidensfield in the tv series Heartbeat.I often have a look when the trains are running, yes i do have an interest in steam locos and no i do not own an anorak or a book with loco numbers in it  ;D

Whitby heh. If you see an unmanned vessel, with a large black dog on the deck coming into port. Find a piece of wood, sharpen a point on it and get a string of Garlic to hang around your neck.  ;D ;D

No sign of any boats, manned by half crazed sailors lashed to the wheel.

My hotel's not quite as cosy & inviting as I'd hoped.

I did have a bizarre experience today though.
I'm wandering along the quayside at 9.0.clock this morning, nobody else around except one guy with a couple of little dogs, walking towards me.
As we passed, he said "Hello Andy".
...What?! What d'ya mean -Hello Andy?! I'm 270 miles from home & I've never been here before, ever! Hello Andy?!

He turned out to be our very own forum member, Mr Big Dog 6. He sold his Reliant trike to Kev, (Kapri), about 5 years ago & I went with him to collect it. That's the only time we ever met. A couple of years later he sold his house & now lives on a boat in Whitby.
Bizarre.
He says Hi by the way :)
