A pair of owned-from-new un-restored Austin Maxis from the early 1970s.

These cars followed on from the smaller Austin 1100 & 1300s, and, as Austin already had the Mini (the original Mini), they called these the Maxi, a trendy name at the time as those of a certain age may recall fashion at the time included the Mini skirt (short) and the Maxi dress (long).

It’s interesting to note who much of the parking space the Maxi takes up compared to the ‘new’ range of Minis.

Before the MGB was this – the MGA.

This example is unusually sporting white-wall tyres.

A Standard Vanguard estate.

A UK model, with perhaps a nod to models across the pond?

Many people are aware of the “Boxer” engines in VWs, Subarus, Porsches and BMW motorcycles.

This is such an engine, only this is a rare ‘un as its not a four or six banger, and its in a British car from Yorkshire – a Jowett, this model being (I think) a pre-war Jowett 8.

Note the length of the inlet tract, and location of car next to the radiator.

A 1928 Hadfield Bean.

This vehicle crashed into a horse and cart in 1944 and taken off the road. ‘Discovered’ in1968 and then restored between 1974 and 1978.
Bean Cars was a brand of motor vehicles made by A Harper Sons & Bean, Ltd at factories in Dudley, Worcestershire

If you like, you can hire this car

To say this is rare could be one whopper of an understatement!

As far as I can tell, it is a 1957 Vignale Abarth 750 Coupe 'Goccia'.

Abarth were renowned for designing highly tuned engines, and they combined Vignale's expertise in lightweight aerodynamic coach building to come up with the ‘Goccia’ in an attempt to challenge for a world speed record.

The name ‘Goccia’ meaning ‘teardrop’.

Other photo from the web.

A little 7cwt Thames van, circa 1961, sign written with weller / banded steel wheels.

Basically the same as the blue Anglia, just a little older, although the Thames van shown in the photo has more chrome trim than the Anglia (not sure if that’s factory or owner fitted).

For these born in the metric age, ‘7cwt’ is a measure of weight, and so defines the carrying capacity of the van.
7cwt means 7 Hundredweight, where a Hundredweight is 112lbs (lbs = Pound, where 2.2 lbs is approx a kilogramme).
Coal was item most households used before the introduction of gas, and was delivered by a (wait for it...) coalman, who carried the coal in a sack over his shoulder, and a sack of coal weighed in at 1cwt (about 50kg).
As there are 20 Hundredweight to the imperial Ton, identifying small vans in this way gave a usable reference as to how much the vehicle could legally transport.

Here endeth the lesson  ;)
