Title: Beetle hot rod chassis plans????
Post by: melosman on January 08, 2019, 05:48:18 PM
I'm after plans to make a chassis for an old beetle to make it front engined RWD, are there any? Does anybody have some they have drawn themselves? Not really decided on the drivetrain, beetle is going to be fitted onto it.

Nope, you’ll be best having a look at lexibugs build thread on the volksrods forum.

Most involve cutting the frame head off, so you might as well just make a chassis to take the body

Go to Facebook and look for front engined Swedish style vw Trikes,  it will show you how to fit the engine in front and how to get the drive to the rear, I think they use an empty gearbox casing to achieve it. Might be of some use for you.

Probably best to make a simple ladder chassis (basic T or Jago Jeep) or stick the body on a std (unmodified to make registration easy) factory chassis and running gear, like a Suzuki Jimny.

Think he's looking to put the beetle body on a different chassis.
Something like this perhaps. :D

I pinched this off the net a while back.

Also , while looking for a chassis for a VW Nova kitcar, I found a tube chassis made by Sterling cars
in the US.

Hmmm. Front engine FWD and rear steering, produces some 'interesting' steering at speed. When I say interesting I really mean truly terrifying.  I spent some time at the Chobham vehicle proving ground, testing such vehicles in the late 70's.
