Title: VSR Split charge relay
Post by: terry t on January 07, 2019, 06:54:00 PM
Hi I'm looking a fitting a Voltage sensing split charge relay to my gl1500 trike

Will this be ok. Fit VSR and second gl1500 battery in the side pannier with a 30amp ignition switched relay to a fuse box for extra lights spot and driving a sat nav and dash cam. then a separate fuse box fused direct from the battery to feed a alarm and usb charging points. diagram attached. Thanks

Should be fine, ensure wiring is up to it. Most folk use wiring with a cross section that is too small.

When I had my canal boats i fitted an alternator controller, ambulances have these fitted. This allows you to drive the alternator at a much higher amp output. Useful on boats, engine speeds too low for high charging & charges a bank of leisure batteries in a much shorter time. Also you can alter settings for your installation. Never a good idea to run an alternator at maximum output.

With this type of installation the wiring must be beefed up to avoid cables overheating and potentially causing a fire on board.

Thanks Paul. I'm going to use 70amp main battery cables to relay and to a gel type motorbike battery for the charging. then 30 amp to the switching relay with a 10 amp switching wire fuse. then 10amp to a fuse box for the accessories. hope this make sense
