The VMCC Sprint Section, who by kind invitation of the Brighton and Hove Motor Club, run the motorcycle side of things at this historic event, have just issued their Press Release (copied below).

BRIGHTON SPEED TRIALS 2019
 Saturday 7th September

The Brighton Speed Trials is considered to be the longest running motor sport event in the world as it first ran way back in July 1905. Jump forward 114 years and Saturday 7th September 2019 sees the yet another running of this iconic event, the current format being a standing-start ¼ mile sprint along Brighton seafront’s Madeira Drive.

The VMCC Sprint Section will once again be organising the motorcycle side of things by kind invitation of our long standing friends and the event organisers, The Brighton and Hove Motor Club.
The VMCC Sprint Section has been running the bikes at Brighton since the section was formed in the early 1980s, however the section’s founders were running the bikes from the very early 1970’s, namely Len Cole and Phil Manzano followed by Paul, Pat & Jayne Standing.

So, to the event - Up to 200 cars and 75 motorcycles will take part during the day, and it’s not unusual to have a mix of bikes entered from the 1920’s right up to current day, and when we say “entered”, the bikes in the paddock are the bikes that are given the beans along the seafront!

Spectator entry includes a free programme and access to the paddock area, so not only can the variety of machines be seen at close quarters, the riders / drivers / mechanics can be chatted to if you want to know some detail about the machinery, plus spectators will be able to follow competitors’ progress live through the whole of the quarter mile sprint via a 21sq metre LCD screen. Advance Tickets have a 20% reduction, details on the Brighton and Hove Motor Club website.

Frosts Cars Ltd of Brighton are the main sponsor for yet another year, and we thank for them for continuing to support this historic event. Thanks are also in order for the marshals, medics and behind-the-scene teams.

So, if you fancy a day at the sea-side and at the same time don’t mind seeing cars and bikes in competition (the fastest bikes can reach over 175mph), the annual Brighton Speed Trials could be worth a visit...........

Yep, that's Mr Slam on his 500cc normally aspirated Triumph taken back in 2011.

He built the little 500cc a bigger brother, a 750cc supercharged Triumph which had its first Brighton Speed Trials outing in 2018. See link below for details of the 750

That's a shame.........

Maybe again next year, and who knows, we may even be able to persuade Sir Manky to come along too, after all, there's only one 'longest running motor sport event' in the world!

I’ve heard there should be three drag/sprint Vincents on display, namely:

Mighty Mouse. The 500cc supercharged single

Super Mouse, the 1100cc supercharged twin

John Renwick’s 1665cc outfit, Epimethius

Here's some video footage of the 2019 Brighton Speed Trials by Nick Pettitt.
He does the Timetravel DVDs covering early drag racing, as well as posting a lot of stuff on UKDRN website (http://www.ukdrn.co.uk/forum/  https://www.ukdrn.co.uk/ ).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJyGtaOGsYA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RewqgqHMzlU

Sat Sept 7th was a good day weather wise, and lots of cars and bikes being timed over the ¼ mile made for a busy day.
The event is run by the Brighton and Hove Motor Club, and they kindly invite the VMCC Sprint Section to organise the motorcycle side of things.

We arrived around 7am and set up with our own Mr Dslam with his beautifully prepared home-built supercharged methanol burning pre-unit Triumph. The silencer is only there to comply with the noise regs of Brighton, it normally runs with open pipes!!
Signing-on followed by Tech Inspection (one of Mr Slam's roles is the chief technical officer for the bikes) and noise-testing of the motorcycles found us with a spectrum of around 70 bikes from the 1930s up to current day, with performance to match. Nick’s videos give a good insight.

The piccies I took are of somewhat older bikes, including the Vincent display organised by the VMCC Sprint Section’s Chief Paddock Marshall Alex Champion in memory of is godfather Bruce Floodthain who had been Senior Paddock Marshall until his passing earlier this year. A cracking display including Brian Chapman’s Mighty Mouse and Super Mouse, John Renwick’s Epimetheus, Morris Brierley’s Methamom, Roy Robertson’s Egli Vincent, Mark Reynolds Egli Vincent and Dick Wheedon’s VOC Grey Flash Sprinter.

First photo – we’ve just started Mr Dslam’s bike on the rollers near the start line, prior to his first run

Getting ready for the off.

With Sprints and hillclimbs, the bike/car is lined up with the timing beam, and ‘chocked’ at the rear wheel to stop the vehicle moving backwards. Unlike drag racing, when the light goes green, the competitor has up to 60 secs to start, as the timing starts only when the light beam is broken (the Goodwood Festival of Speed is an example of this).

This year, the start line duties for the bikes were performed by members of the VMCC Sprint Section (Paul & Steve in this case) whereas in previous years it was the B&HMC.

We tend to like custom build here on MMM, so this is a 1962 Norton Featherbed frame with an ex-speedway Jawa sitting neatly within, don't think its run at Brighton before.

A Sprint Special ‘on a budget’.
Very tidy little RS250 Honda.
The previous owner retired, so the bike has a new owner/custodian, and he’s having fun campaigning it.

Blokes talking motorbikes...............

Mr Slam has the attentive ear of the gentleman in the white overalls.

The silencer is required to conform with Brighton's noise regulations ns is usually removed as the majority of sprints run without noise regs. (NICE!)

Bikes returning from the holding paddock after their runs.

One of the great things about the Brighton Speed Trials is the variety of machines competing at the same event. The earliest bike was from 1926.

The sprint special, 314, is Gavin’s MZ “MadneZ”, and (for an MZ) it goes like the proverbial
