Title: Basing stones
Post by: Manky Monkey on March 03, 2018, 09:36:38 PM
Is this just a local thing in Basingstoke or is it a national phenomena?
The latest school craze is finally something creative & harmless -which tends to make me think it's been promoted by teachers, rather than dreamt up by the kids. At least it brightens up the place & doesn't do any damage.
Choose a stone, paint it, then leave it in a random spot for someone else to find. Not sure what happens after that -do they move them to another spot? Or take them home & see who can amass the biggest rock group? Maybe you replace it with one of your own?
I've been spotting them around the town for the last couple of weeks.

Key words, creative and harmless. Good idea. Probably raise a few smiles from those who spot them too.

We found a load up at Crabtree too. A lot had messages written on them remembering people etc

I mentioned it to my Sister. She said it's an idea being pushed on Facebook. Neat idea. I think I might paint a Manky Monkey one and leave it somewhere. ☺

Pity they haven't got anything better to do with their time, but there you go, a society that lives by "Facebook"....bah, humbug!! painting bloody "mystery" pebbles.......... ??? ??? ???

I think this idea has been going longer than Facebook - just that it only pops up from time to time.

Creative.
Imaginative.
Artistic.
Gets kids outdoors, away from computer screens, exploring the World around them, connecting with other kids in a shared pastime that's sociable, non violent, non destructive, doesn't involve, drink, drugs or any other dangerous substances, (have you seen the American kids daring each other to chew washing powder capsules?!) ...etc, etc, etc.
Can't see a down side to it personally -I'm pretty sure it won't lead to a World shortage of pebbles, but I could be wrong. :)

Ditto. Doesn't matter where it started. I think anything that encourages children to be artistic and away from a screen is a great idea. Not a bad idea for adults either.  :)

140 hand painted Peter Rabbit stones will be hidden around the Basingstoke branch of Marks & Spencer this weekend.
Nice idea -or big business commercialising an innocent pastime?

The latter - AND undercover advertising for the new Peter Rabbit film, which is a travesty compared to the original story.

I wonder how much stock will end up on the floor with little children eager to move stuff. Oops.

Cute huh :)
At a customer's house. Apparently her little girl painted it, but liked it so much she didn't want to lose it, so now it lives on their doorstep :)

I'm enjoying this thread. Good job you're a postman otherwise we probably wouldn't get to see these. Simple but sweet and a great idea for children (and Olds).  :D

Posh rocks -although buying them pre-painted kinda defeats the object of it all I think :)

Yeah, it doesn't look it in the photo, but it was almost completely round. Sperical. Choosing just the right pebble seems to be important! :)

Everything's green in my garage! Maybe I should paint a Junkyard Frog stone!

;D I'm off to New York again in July. I thought I could take a Union Jack stone & leave it on Brighton Beach, Brooklyn :)

You know Brighton Beach is renowned for the Russian Underworld. Careful where you place that stone.  ::)

You know you said you were going to New Jersey this time. Well don't forget the Italian Mafia has a home there.  ::)

Have fun on your holiday.  ;D

Anything else I should be worried about?! :)
I went to BB King's blues club, not far from Time Square last year, just so I could say I've been there, (saw him play in Bournemouth a few years ago. Now sadly left us). Then I heard the other day that it closed down last month. So grab the chance to go places & experience things while you can people :) Nothing lasts forever.

You know I was only winding you up.  :D

NY is pretty safe nowadays. Probably safer than London at the moment with all the stabbings going on.  Go to the Guggenheim. I think you missed it off last time. Brilliant architecture and art.
Have a lovely hol.  :)

You seem to have started a new fad.  I found these at Druridge Bay up here in Northumberland (God's country according to one of my old TA RSM). We've got wide open spaces up here, great scenery and some nice twisty roads.

The sheep one reminded me of a news item about a young adult who put up posters on a bridge where some suicides had taken place. Very simple  messages on bits of paper really but powerful all the same. The main theme is "You matter".

For those interested in the news item:
http://www.itv.com/news/2018-07-23/teenager-saves-lives-after-pinning-messages-of-hope-to-suicide-hot-spot-in-northumbria/
 (http://www.itv.com/news/2018-07-23/teenager-saves-lives-after-pinning-messages-of-hope-to-suicide-hot-spot-in-northumbria/)

Elsewhere, youngsters attach coats to trees in the Winter for the homeless. ‘Free on a tree: If you need this, it’s yours’. This reminded me of the flowers you photographed that time Andy, for the lonely to take home.

It's nice to hear or see things like this, that help others or bring a smile.
