Title: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2018
Post by: Manky Monkey on January 16, 2018, 08:19:41 PM
Yup, it's that time again. I've just received the entry form for this year's show.
So, what do we think? Are we up for it again?

Despite having one of the best days I've had in years (bringing along our projects) I/we most likely won't make it ?  My wife and my self may not even be here in the UK ? But you have to keep the tradition going Andy.. ;)

What's the date Andy?  Can't commit till I know that.  If it's ok, we'll do what we did last time - ccame up the night before and camped in the van at the Fox & Goose at Greywell - just the other side of the M3 but it feels like it's in the depths of the country, and there's nothing to pay as long as you use the pub for drinks and/or their very excellent but not expensive food.
If anyone's coming from a distance it's great!  (And even if like us, you just don't do getting up early!)

I might join you!
Sorry, I put the date in my original post but it seems to have disappeared! (posting from my SmartPhone, which has a habit of Auto Correcting everything).
Sunday the 13th of May '18.

But you don't do camping!  I don't think they have rooms.

Lucky you. That sounds fun. The holiday, not the packing and cleaning.  :)

Haven't been to the States for 10 years, it's a new event called Nitro Revival. Would have gone to the inaugural one in September at Barona, but time and money got in the way (lack of).

Wow. You gave the impression before going to NY, NY that you could take it or leave it. It seems you definitely took to it, tourist attractions and all!  :D

Didn't I post any photos? I must've, surely?
Yes, I loved it. Very hot, (90 degrees), which isn't usually my thing, but I spent a week walking for 9 or 10 hours a day, just randomly, all over the place.
Very friendly city -I was out till 2 in the morning, all alone, & felt perfectly safe. Very clean. Very busy. Loads of quirky interesting stuff to see.
Next time I'd like to cross the water to Brooklyn as well.

No Mankymobiles either. My truck isn't together enough to move at the moment & the bike's running but not MOT'd & might be in the local bike shop for some engine work by then.
Loony's Dad has an individual display pass, but is happy to park with us if needed. So that frees up another couple of passes.

So. I've gotta ask -is this the year we finally give it a miss? Go out on a high with last year's record attendance, rather than gradually dwindling down to just a couple of us?
Terry has a bunch of American car guys who'd like to come along, but they're not members of the Manky family &, no offence to them, but I'd rather they didn't display them under the MMMotors banner if it's not Us.
It's getting harder & harder to motivate people to take part in these things & we've been a bit quiet on the project front lately. Is there a last minute rush of entrants I don't know about, or should I send Terry the remaining passes & let his guys take our place?

Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2018
Post by: BikerGran on May 01, 2018, 03:43:19 PM
I think it's up to you Andy - if your vehicles aren't there it's not very MMM is it?   And maybe you'd like a break from having to host the stand, either to actually see round the rest of the show or maybe to do something completely different?

Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2018
Post by: stinkey on May 01, 2018, 05:55:27 PM
Give it a miss mate..concentrate on your projects..

Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2018
Post by: Manky Monkey on May 02, 2018, 04:03:36 PM
I'd still go along & support the show, but must admit, after 13 years of the website & our pitch there, it would be nice to go as a normal punter, with no responsibilities :)
Not necessarily the end for us at the Basingstoke show, but it does seem like we should take a break. Projects are a bit thin on the ground here this year &, speaking purely personally, I'd rather go out on last year's high, than gradually dwindle down to 2 or 3 of us sat in a gazebo :)
Would anyone seriously object? -if we're not doing it I need to get the vehicle passes sent off to Terry & have a quiet word with my mate who's one of the organisers, just to check they'd be O.K with us sub letting our pitch, (I suppose they wouldn't know -still vehicles in our place, there just wouldn't be a MMMotors banner).

Lunatic Senior already has a pass for the individual entrants in the other show field & Phunkie has one of our passes & is happy to park with Terry's crew.
Bobbi, can you post your pass to Terry please & I'll send him the remaining ones.
Looks like you're in charge of parking this year Tel! :)

So far it looks like I have got 10 vehicles coming and Phunkie so will part fill the pitch. They can spread out a bit ;D.  Not sure if CopperSmith or Olds are still coming
There will be no gazebo or cakes

No cakes! Well that's it then.  :'(

Sounds like a good turn out Terry even if the MMM banner isn't going up. Hopefully I'll be there. Everything crossed anyway. Let's hope the weather is good and the show is its usual success. Perhaps others might decide to come on the day.  :)

Yep, I'm OK. Have good days and bad, but mostly good(ish).
Spending more time at the forge, (weather permitting) but must get back to working on the car.
Whenever I'm near South Ham, I pop by the garage just in case you are there.

I don't live in the garage -although it does feel like it :)
Would be nice to see you Dave.

Just got in. I did leave the show before sunset,  :)  but as I was out and about, I went to visit family in Fareham. Plus good to give the car a run as lately it hasn't been going far and hopefully it's charged the battery up a bit.

Well it was lovely to see sooooo many Mankies. Yes Terry, I mean you.  :D  You did well though bringing along your own
GL1500 Trike with its impressive Jag axle, plus friends who brought 4 nice American cars (I would list what they were but I'd probably get one wrong so I'll leave Terry to add that detail) and a Can Am trike. Chris (Phunkie) had his very smart '57 MG Magnette there. Lunatic's Dad (Dave) popped by but his early Model A Ford was showing in the main field. Oh, and mustn't forget, Chevy Rick showing off his customised golf cart (with brolly stand) for him and Alfie.  ;D

Olds and his wife Linda made a quick visit and a certain well known person turned up sans bike or pop. Who could that be?  ;)  Yes you guessed it, our esteemed leader, who after the show was off to visit Stinkey. (You are so easy to tease Andy but you know it's done with love. We are all glad you enjoyed your stress free Basingstoke this year.)

Last but not least, a very buff Merv  :o  (time to change your Avatar on Manky) came along with his wife Sharon. She said it took practically as long to get parked and into the show as it did to get from Gloucester to Basingstoke! The sun had definitely brought the visitors out.

So, not quite the turn out we've enjoyed in the past and lots of faces missing for various reasons (well BikerGran said she had had a better offer  - but you could have still dropped the bacon sarnies off  :P) but thanks to Terry and friends and Chris for coming along and at least marking our space for future years. Get on with those projects!  8)
JJ  :)

I think young Terence did very well at short notice. Well done Sir. You realise you're in charge every year now?!
Thank you to all those who came along. As always, it was appreciated :)
Yes, I went on to visit Mr Stinkey in Dorset later in the day, then on to see my Mum after that, so I'll post a few snapshots tomorrow.

Well done Terry for filling the pitch this year. I really was intending on bringing the trike but it wasn't to be. The trikes not broken, I am. A run out for petrol the night before made me realise that it wouldn't be a good idea, so Linda and I just popped by for a very quick look around. Sorry I couldn't stay longer JJ. Perhaps next year.

To be brutally honest, I wish I'd been there!  I had booked for a VW event in Somerset, it was mostly cold and damp and there were only two outfits from our club there.  Too tired to head for the marquee on Friday night, and the sounds I was hearing didn't really inspire me to make an effort Saturday night, so I went home!

I COULD have been staying at the Fox and Goose (where Mike and I stayed last year the night before Basingstoke)) with a group of campers/campervans, motorhomes who enjoy staying in places that don't cost the earth, AND meeting up with an old friend, AND been to the NOT MMM stand at Basingstoke!   T

That'll larn me!

The local paper says there were 15,000 visitors to the show on Sunday.

I can believe that. It built up slowly but then again we got there early so they probably arrived on time.  :D

Couple of announcements by the organisers, a number of cars had parked on the Memorial Garden and were told to move them. I think the organisers were shocked someone would actually do that.  :o
The other was, parents, control your children and don't let them put their hands on the vehicles or climb on them. Shame they have to say this but there are always some, but to be fair to the children, they are being shown their full sized toys so of course they want to touch or get in them.  :)
