Title: Comic Con London
Post by: Manky Monkey on October 31, 2017, 10:14:40 AM
I haven't posted many event photos lately, but I'm still getting out & about.
Thought I'd try something different at the weekend, so I caught the train up to London, (horrible journey -replacement bus service), & spent the day at Comic Con at the Excel Centre at Victoria Docks.
I'm a bit of an armchair geek -love sci-fi, "graphic novels" & the whole culture of imaginary characters & different worlds, but not so heavily into it that I recognise them all, especially some of the more obscure Japanese Manga & Anime characters. I'm just comic curious :)
Comic Con's a huge indoor show where you can buy ...comic books, surprisingly, collectables, memorabilia, props, materials to make costumes -all that kinda stuff. More importantly for a lot of people though, it's a chance for the serious -& not so serious, "Cosplayers", (not some sort of fetish, but those who love designing & making their own costumes), to show them off.
I love the imagination & creativity of it all. Some of them were truly amazing. I'm reaching the point where I don't want to build any more vehicles -yeah, I've already reached it -just want to use the ones I've got, so could enjoy channelling my creative urges into something like this instead. I quite like the Steam punk genre -Victorian inventor/adventurers inspired by the likes of Jules Verne. That could be fun to make all the props for.
There's another Comic Con in May, so I'll definitely be going back.

Pleased to report I don't know any of those people or their characters. I know, I'm sad  :D no time for that sort of thing, maybe I've missed a whole altered lifestyle. Dan Dare and the Eagle was a posh comic, Dandy and Beano were the norm, my brother used to have the Tiger, I was out doing the paper round  >:(

I can imagine that some of these people travelled on the Tube. And I bet no one batted an eyelid.

Looks great fun. Love the pic of the stormtrooper and the child. Not sure what the child was dressed as though but very cute. I did a double take on the pic of Scooby Doo's Velma. I thought it was Janie for a minute  :o  (not sure what her Manky name is now).

These events are a massive success around the world. I wondered what the attendances were like and turns out 180,000 attended the one in New York last year but Japan holds similar events with over half a million attending. Big business.

Yeah, escapism from the real World's always popular.
8,000 Facebookers have marked themselves as having gone to it. It filled all the exhibition halls at the Excel Centre for 3 days & is on every 6 months.
The small child with the stormtrooper was a really cute little Asian boy dressed as Chewbacca, the 7 foot tall character from Star Wars.
Janie was there but just a normal punter like me I think.

What a coincidence. Are you sure it wasn't her?   :D

Daphne was there too.

I remarked to her that it was a shame she never got to smile for the cameras :) (a "Weeping Angel" from Doctor Who).

This guy looks like he's just really badly made, but that's exactly how the character looks. He's from a video game & is meant to look like a child's drawing. The poor chap inside him can't use his hands in the costume. He was having a breather, with his "head" off when I asked for a photo, so his girlfriend had to remove his glasses & put his head back on. They insist on being complete & in character to have their photos taken. :)

A female stormtrooper posing with the UK Garrison, a Star Wars re-enactment group. Her boyfriend was a bearded Princess Leia.

The work that had gone into some of the costumes was amazing. Nope, no idea who she was.

I know this guy, but don't know how I know! (Loony's into this kind of stuff & I used to pick up snippets of info from him when I was renting space in his workshop, so might be from there).
He's The Ghost in the Machine. Can't remember his name, or whether it's a film or a comic book, but the idea is he's a spirit who can move around in the real World by being inside an airtight mechanical suit. The 2 women are his Government minders. If it's a film this might be the real costume cos it looked too good for Cosplay.
The character also swears constantly. I thanked him for letting me take the photo & was met with F*ck you! -which I hope was him in character :)

My grand-daughter is really into comic con and been to a couple in Bournemouth - she' really into anime and she went as characters I'd never heard of but we did have fun making part of her costume together.   She believes in making it yourself not hiring it,  she's a great believer in keeping it real.

A lot of them went home on the Docklands light railway in costume. When I was on the Jubilee Line, heading back to Waterloo, I spotted a woman in normal clothes but with pointy Pixie ears -nobody took any notice of her at all. Maybe she was nothing to do with Comic Con :)

26th - 28th of October next year.

andy the guy above i think is from hell boy the golden army, Johann Krauss. he came out of the suit as a whisp of smoke.

red guy is deadpool, guy with white hair and two swords is geralt from computer game the witcher, a couple of dr whos, a nice wednesday from adams family and a mad hatter from tim burttons alice in wonderland and an edward scissorhands.

monkey magic was great "pigsyyyy" ha ha ha.

would have liked to have gone. maybe next year

We watched it on Netflix - Disney type film, but visually stunning and pretty amusing in places

Remember Magic Monkey from Water Margin, (a dubbed Japanese historical adventure from the 70s).

Showing our age but yep, used to watch that. This character however, is from the similar programme called Monkey which was badly dubbed but I think that was part of its appeal. This was more popular than Water Margin. A bit sillier. Chap in photo has captured a very good likeness as he wasn't a handsome chappie (see below), not as lovely looking as Manky Monkeys!  :D

Ok I only know a couple.
I think the lady in black with the mask is trying to be hit girl from the film kick add, the guys in red and black are a group of deadpools comic book character , a couple of jedi from star wars,  a twisted Alice in wonderland on a game of thrones throne and a bunch of manga characters I don't know sorry.

I do like sci-fi films and comics. Good with rembering useless stuff from films. I had a very nasty £60 a month comic book habit at one point but now even £60 probably wouldn't get you that many.

Oh, I can see it now.  ::)  :-[  Probably one of the minority who has never watched that prog.

Neither have I :)
There was a guy in a perfect green Kick Ass suit, but you can only take so many photos -I was using my Smartphone with a spare plug-in battery pack & still ran out of charge. Fortunately the Excel Centre has a couple of pay as you go charging points. £1.50 for half an hour.
There were a couple of Batmen, (all modern, serious ones, not the real, 60s Adam West version), but more than a dozen Jokers in different guises. I guess he's a more fun character to play. Lots of Marvel characters, especially Captain America, & loads of Disney princesses.
How about these?

I haven't watched  game of thrones either, don't have sky

Ginger lady is character from Disney film brave, then I guess gimli from Lord of the rings, followed by a female loki  (Norse god of mischief, in Thor film), pink rabbit is from a computer game I think but not certain, then the rocketer I think Disney film, a naughty Hogwarts student  ;), two excellent predators, characters from Dragon ball X a cartoon and game I think, not sure about the girl with wings but will go with manga and the last one is star Lord from guardian's of the galaxy.

God my head is full of us less crap

You had a busy day there Andy.

I think I might go with you next year Andy. Its looks quite interesting, I like these peoples commitment to their hobby and it is not as  weird as Train spotting or Bus number collecting. A lot of people that think they are normal often have interests that others think of as strange. And as the great John Lennon once sung "what ever gets you through the Night is alright".
