Title: Reliant Trike Frame
Post by: Simon.S on July 05, 2017, 07:24:49 PM
I'm looking for someone to build a new frame for my trike!  Please can anyone help?
My existing frame has seen better days and my welding isn't up to much.   (More like pigeon poo)  and I definitely can't bend tubes for toffee!
Mechanics and wiring, thankfully I'm capable of!  (Phew)
I have seen a lot of different frames out there for sale, however many of them seem to be built by people that frankly shouldn't be let out their front doors unsupervised.   (Only my opinion)
However the Manky Monkey Forum Trike is precisely what I've been looking for.
The current frame was wrapped around a lamp post by an ex, (one of the main reasons for her being an ex) it has been straightened but is weakened from its ordeal.

Oh definitely!   I'm also fully aware that a reliant trike isn't everybody's cup of tea.
Maybe I'm getting fussy in my old age.

Reliant frames are easy

For someone that knows what they're doing,  you're probably right,  unfortunately I have no idea what I'm doing.
I have a few ideas what I want.
Was hoping to re-use my existing front end, but that's mainly because I've got a wide front wheel.

If you have all the parts it's easy.?

I'm minus :-
Tubing
Tube bender
Tube bending knowledge
Welding experience

That's just the start.  Like I say, I can do basic mechanical and elections aren't a problem.

Yep, very similar to and inspired by a Manky frame.
Designed to allow the head, sump or clutch  to be fitted/removed with the engine in the frame. Also no built in rack as it was for a pickup.

Definitely along those lines.
I have a King and Queen seat sitting in my garage that I'd like to use on it as well instead of just a single seater.
On the current frame it's a nightmare when just doing the basic service checks like checking tappets, the engine has to be lowered just to lift the rocker cover and I know it sounds lazy and less fun, but I was thinking as unfortunately not getting any younger and I have a couple of large stomach herniours that is time to make life as easy as possible.

 ;D ;D  lmao  ;D ;D I said "Easier " not "Die"!
I got this one 12yrs ago after getting devorced and contemplating a bike!  Then I was struck by lighting  (had a thought more like) I've always liked the look of certain trikes and I've never regreted it!  Yes, it's been a "Moo", but it has a lovely engine and goes like the clappers!

This was my first attempt at a trike frame. It really isn't too difficult to build a Manky type frame but it's certainly not a quick job, which is why a decent frame will not be cheap. The thick wall pipe bends well without collapsing and makes an incredibly strong frame that is easy to weld. A 12 ton pipe bender from ebay will cost about £70 new delivered and if you are not confidant in welding there are usually welders out there who will do it for you for a few quid once you have it jigged up.
Naturally if changing the frame the trike will need to be re-registered ;)

I was lucky enough to be shown "Baychimps" trike the other day, what a great bit of work that is, made all want, want, want  ;D but I have another project on the go and it will be my last one :o

Hold on a minute you guys, Simon has laid the cards down, knows a bit about mech. and elect. but sod all about pipe strangling or welding, so its pointless him buying a benders really. I also feel that if he needs one built, then perhaps the pro. outfits are his best bet, as most am. builders on here are far to busy with their own multitude of (misguided) projects ;D, so unless I'm reading the situation incorrectly, use the site as we all do Simon, and its a pleasure to do so I can assure you, but a purpose built frame, maybe that's an ask too far................only my take on it however, Morrag

I was just trying say that while a Manky style frame can be built with little previous experience or equipment it wouldn't be quick but it would be a lot cheaper even allowing for the purchase of some equipment.

Hey Olds, I get that, but y'know its sometimes easy to forget just how "unskilled" some are, and that's not a criticism, just an observation, but it can mean that what appears to some as relatively simple to some, can, to others, be right out of court! like Dirty harry said "...know your limitations!" ;D ;D..Morrag

Simon, where we're you when I needed an electric magic man ? I'd gladly help if you was nearer but I'm sort of packing up my workshop and getting ready for my next adventure so don't really want another big project  ;D
