Title: XS750
Post by: Clive on April 18, 2017, 04:25:34 PM
As you all may know, I recently sold my Savage, a decision I instantly regretted as it was being loaded into the new owners van!?!?!
I now have a fully up and running CRF250X, but missed having something to tinker with, so...................

Picked this up this morning:

(http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/xs750/D951ACEF-F2BD-4BB0-B302-5AAB6D33E10D_zpsqooz0r3r.jpg) (http://s915.photobucket.com/user/533clive/media/xs750/D951ACEF-F2BD-4BB0-B302-5AAB6D33E10D_zpsqooz0r3r.jpg.html)

(http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/xs750/0343DE16-61B2-4C11-A012-1DF44B707E5C_zpsevqfg3hg.jpg) (http://s915.photobucket.com/user/533clive/media/xs750/0343DE16-61B2-4C11-A012-1DF44B707E5C_zpsevqfg3hg.jpg.html)

Although a little scruffy, the engine runs really sweet for a 39 year old bike, and apart from tidying (and of course a paint job :D ) , and sorting out the front end (callipers, light, and a little wiring) it shouldn't take a huge amount of time to get up and running.

Anyone recognise the tank? It's running twin vacuum petcocks at the moment, and I'd like to replace them with non-vacuum.

You may also notice, the right hand side panel is actually a thin plastic 'shape' covered in attractive leatherette!?!?! :D

From the shape of the filler cap I'd guess Suzuki, but can't remember what the XS750 "Factory Custom" tanks looked like.
Good choice Clive! I've had 3 or 4 of them, as well as the bigger XS850, (& an XS1100 & half a dozen XS650s!). Commuted 20 miles each way to work on one for several years in all weathers.
Known for a dodgy 2nd gear selector & can get very rattly when the cam chains are worn, but otherwise pretty bullet proof.
Sound gorgeous with a Marshal DeepTone exhaust.
What's the front end off? (not an XS obviously).
One of my old ones, powder coated in Government filing cabinet grey, (yes, really).

No rattles at all from this. Was obviously well looked after................or full of sawdust!

Front ends off a ZX6R

Starting to look a little tidier.

Front calipers needed a complete rebuild, every piston was well and truly seized in the caliper.

And I've spent more time at the moment removing paint, rather than putting paint on. Everything that was chrome had been sprayed black, badly, and whilst still on the bike!?!?!?!

I had one of these back in the early eighties. I had a three into one piper exhaust on mine......sounded great on acceleration. Wish I still had it now. Theres a few videos on youtube of xs 750s and 850s that have been cafe raced, they all look and sound great.

Have I mentioned how much I hate carbs!!!! (The carburettor kind, LOVE the food kind.....)

When I bought it, two out the three carbs were flooding. Pulled them apart, gave them a good clean, and adjusted the floats, as two were out by quite a lot.
All back together, and one is still flooding.
Adjusted the float again to the lowest float level, as the tolerance is 2.5mm (!!!), still doing it.
Swapped the float needle, and floats from one of the other ones into it, re-adjusted the floats and...........still doing it.

Going to order a refurb kit, but anyone got any other ideas!?!?!

Got to be the float valves, if the floats are set and unpunctured!! Morrag

Yep, unpunctured, had em submerged and no bubbles..........

Still waiting on the carb kits, so started on the paint. Nice classic paint.............................

.............................with a twist!

Got a replacement right side panel, but it's longer than the left one, and just looked 'wrong', so ordered another left side to fit on the right

Carbs sorted, the float valves/body cured it straight away.

'Drained' the oil from the middle and final drive gearboxes, well I say drained, there was the smallest of amounts left in both, and was full of sludge, but no metal chips on the magplug, so flushed them both through, and re-filled with the correct amount of fresh gear oil.

Oh, and base colour on the tank!

Getting there with this now:

(http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/xs750/F94C5001-7C1F-41AA-88B3-961C3699D7D8_zpsvtjriqzd.jpg) (http://s915.photobucket.com/user/533clive/media/xs750/F94C5001-7C1F-41AA-88B3-961C3699D7D8_zpsvtjriqzd.jpg.html)

(http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/xs750/AF5052D4-6EA1-4260-AFAB-5DE4AE7B00FB_zpsx2q2okyu.jpg) (http://s915.photobucket.com/user/533clive/media/xs750/AF5052D4-6EA1-4260-AFAB-5DE4AE7B00FB_zpsx2q2okyu.jpg.html)

(http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/xs750/85224895-730C-4332-9FA7-C0706449798A_zpsi9xzjari.jpg) (http://s915.photobucket.com/user/533clive/media/xs750/85224895-730C-4332-9FA7-C0706449798A_zpsi9xzjari.jpg.html)

Some minor electrical problems. Indicators don't flash just come on steady, and front brake doesn't illuminate the brake light, although switch is good (just going to run a separate line, rather than taking the loom apart).
So really just got to get the tank paint finished, and sort out the exhaust and it should be good to go......................... which means there is loads of other niggles I haven't found yet to sort! :) :) :)

:D :D

Thanks buddy. Got it flashed up the other day, and runs sweet as a nut. Just the non-flashing indicators to sort, and paint on the tank and should be done. Paint may be slightly longer than I thought as I dislocated my thumb

Title: Re: XS750
Post by: Clive on May 17, 2017, 03:13:43 PM
Anyone have any idea why the indicators are refusing to flash?

Fitted a new (known good) flasher relay but still no flashy!! Come on fine, cancel fine, but no blinky-blinky.........

Non-led indicators fitted to it, so should be no problems there, and all original wiring used, except the addition of indicator warning lights as the original cluster was shot.

As an aside.............does it actually NEED indicators?

run a fly lead from the battery to the unit, see if it flashes. Spanners on here sorted mine out, something to do with to many watts, think I had big bulbs in the system, Mike had the details, I followed and it worked, cannot remember why now, sorry

flasher unit  us,, or wrong wattage builds

Thanks. Will check the bulb wattages

Title: Re: XS750
Post by: morrag on May 17, 2017, 07:04:18 PM
The more traditional, aka old fashioned, Flasher units, rely on a load of 42 watts to flash efficiently Clive, so that's 2x 12v 21 w lamps you should be using per side, Morrag

Title: Re: XS750
Post by: Clive on May 17, 2017, 07:36:36 PM
Cheers buddy. 21w each side, is that 10.5 per bulb as there's four in total (two left (front and rear), and two right (front and rear)) or am I just being thick!?!

Title: Re: XS750

its normally 21watts per corner  (per lamp)  == 42 watts per side

unless

you have low wattage or LED lamps,,, in the case of LED lamps you will need a resister in each lamp feed wire ,, allthough  it is possible to get aftermarket flasher units suitable for LED lamps

Well, all change, this has to go! Nothing sinister, just suddenly need the space. Will quite happily take a loss on the bits I've paid out for on it, but would like back the £800 I paid for it!

As it stands at the moment:

(http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/xs750/7E2488E3-1A5C-4C51-BD74-C07A73369499_zps9pxdwsu0.jpg) (http://s915.photobucket.com/user/533clive/media/xs750/7E2488E3-1A5C-4C51-BD74-C07A73369499_zps9pxdwsu0.jpg.html)

And the tank, pre-clear. It's been lacquered now, but doesn't look the best, so may need the (non-artwork) main part re-doing at some stage, but it's more than acceptable:
(http://i915.photobucket.com/albums/ac360/533clive/xs750/B5A1816D-E1BA-4FB7-863B-6035D72F97FD_zpsyym0qmp9.jpg) (http://s915.photobucket.com/user/533clive/media/xs750/B5A1816D-E1BA-4FB7-863B-6035D72F97FD_zpsyym0qmp9.jpg.html)

As I said, I'd like back what I paid originally, and the only thing left to sort (I think) is the indicators (or just remove them), and a bit of fettling on the seat to make it fit better.

Will obviously need trailering/vanning away, from Andover.
