Title: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2017
Post by: Manky Monkey on January 15, 2017, 10:50:30 AM
Sunday 14th May 2017.
War Memorial Park, Basingstoke, Hants, RG21 4AH.

Right, I've just received the entry form for this year's transport show here in Basingstoke, Hants.
The regulars here will know we have a little forum get-together there every year & pull together as many forum projects as we can for a pitch in the Club Stands field. We welcome anything interesting, including unfinished projects cos the public always seem to be interested in the "behind the scenes" side of builds.
As the name suggests, it's a mixed show of all sorts of transport, so lots of vintage cars, but also motorcycles, buses, lorries, military, the odd traction engine etc.  Thorneycroft lorries & Wallis & Stevens traction engines were Basingstoke's major employers for over 100 years, so they're always well represented.
The closing date for entries is the 1st of April. We've struggled to find enough vehicles for a decent display for the last couple of years, so I've got to ask again -do we want to do it again this year? (we've done about 10 years worth now), or is it time to give it a rest?

Put that another way - what do YOU want to do?

:) I'm happy either way Bobbi, but don't want to put on a half-hearted display. We've never got organised, despite always saying this year will be better, but the chaotic mix of people & machines probably sums us up best. If we do it again I'd like a decent number of vehicles -if we're down to just a handful it might be better to give it a rest?

The visitors always seem to enjoy the Manky pitch, mainly I think because it is different and slightly disorganised. We are an easy lot to approach and are always up for a chat. Some clubs are so regimented and so busy polishing that I think visitors are put off approaching them.

Don't try to change us now!  ;D

I must admit it is nice to have somewhere to gather, knowing you are going to meet friendly like minded people and see a few interesting vehicles

I'm quite happy to do it again, but we really struggled for vehicles last year. If we're doing it, we need more of you to get involved please.

Not sure of my schedule yet but if I am about I can bring 2 or 3 historic drag/sprint bikes. Don't do shows as a rule but happy to oblige if I can.

Love to do it Mr M but just too far from the depths of West wales, I'm afraid! for me these days anyway, but I'm sure the "troops" nearer to hand will give it, and you, the necessary support, as once these events stop, invariably they are very difficult to re-start...best of luck with it, Morrag

Very true.
I bumped into old forum member Muffin today, (Simon, who used to have the black Reliant trike). He's now got a Suzuki Katana. Lunatic's re-spraying the tank & he's having a few other odds n ends repaired, but is up for bringing it along.
So we need to get a list underway. As I said, if we're doing this again, we really need support from you guys. Bring an unfinished project. If you haven't got one, start one!

Muffin -Suzuki Katana.

Can't remember what happened, but I'll sort it nearer the time & maybe post them out this year?
The guy I usually deal with has retired I think, so we may need to do the insurance/registration thing again, but hopefully not.

If I can borrow a trailer and if I still have it, might bring Gertie along with a 'For Sale' notice.........  :/

Nothing exciting to bring this year, as I've gone back to my motorcycling roots and bought a CRF250X, although if the Savage hasn't sold, I could bring that in the T4 with a 'for sale' sign! :D

How much is the entrants fee?  It seems we have a good chance of bringing 2 trikes and 3 chops?  Hoping to hire a big truck for the day ? Subject to weather ?

Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2017
Post by: Manky Monkey on March 11, 2017, 07:36:49 PM
It's free mate to participants. Visitors pay 2 quid for parking. That's all.
Really need as many as we can -struggled to fill our pitch last year.
We don't do a lot, just sit around, chat & eat cake, but it's a chance to meet a few forum members & there are 900 vehicles there, spread over 2 fields. It'd be nice to see you.
The entry form has to be in by the end of this month, so if anyone else fancies it, shout now please.

Sigh...............

Have heard the old saying of going "nineteen to the dozen" referred to as going "nine to the dozen", yet they're using it to still mean going very quickly.

You give 'em an inch, and they take 1.609344km..........  :D

It is worrying. I think obtaining a good general knowledge is a dying art (like mental arithmetic) but what can you expect when society is being dumbed down and so many children are being brought up by parents who are not far from being children themselves. Each generation just seems to get worse, along with their expectations. We already have many families who have two or three generations totally reliant on benefits and have no intention of working. It is ironic that those who have the most time to help their children with their education seem to be the ones who care the least about it. For many of those that do work, their time is limited and I applaud those that find the time to ensure their child's education is supported at home.

As for your stamps, what has happened to your freebies, don't you get them anymore?

Right, I think I've posted out 25 vehicle passes. I asked the organisers for more, so we've got another 10. 3 of those might go to Chris & his Dad for Chris's Chevy pick-up & dragster project & his Dad's Suzuki sidecar racer, (he's been with us for the last couple of years). Also got to save one for Simon & his Suzuki Katana, so there's another 6 places available if anyone wants to come along.

We've been doing this show for something like 10 years now & I've never yet been able to ride or drive my vehicles there. Always costs me a fortune to rent a van or whatever. Hopefully a mate with a recovery truck can take my Pop there this year, but I can't get my bike there without renting a van as well. Before I do, is anyone going who'd have space in a van or on a trailer to pick mine up en route? Yes, I could almost push it there, but there's a serious hill between my garage & the show field!

No chance of putting the bike on the back of the pickup I spose?

:D No, the pick-up bed's way too short.

I have a towbar but no trailer.  If i had a trailer it would probably have my trike on it with a For Sale notice.

:) Not really important. I'd like to get both there just to bulk out the pitch, but the Pop hasn't been for a year or two. It won't be finished though -obviously.

What time do we have to be there by?  I'm sure it's been said somewhere in this thread but I can't find it!

Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2017
Post by: Manky Monkey on May 08, 2017, 01:51:38 PM
The tickets say 10.30 latest, but I'll aim to be there by 9 ish, just to put up the banners, (better check they're still O.K actually!), & the new pop-up gazebo I bought yesterday.
The sooner people are there, the sooner we can arrange them in some semblance of chaos. Anyone fancy marshalling the vehicles this year? I'm rubbish at parking them pretty! :)

Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2017
Post by: Manky Monkey on May 08, 2017, 08:46:37 PM
O.K, I've completely lost track of who's coming this year, but for all those who are, I'll aim to be there around 9. All vehicles must be onsite by 10.30 at the latest, but the earlier the better.
I'm hopeless at arranging vehicles in a pleasing display, so if anyone wants to take charge of the parking arrangements, please do.
I've got a 10 foot square gazebo & BikerGran's bringing a table & camping chairs. I'll dig out the banners tomorrow & make sure they're still serviceable. Anything else we need?

Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2017
Post by: Manky Monkey on May 08, 2017, 08:49:38 PM
I'm keeping 2 vehicle passes back for myself in the hope I can get one or both of my unfinished projects there, but have 4 more passes left if anyone else wants to join us?

Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2017

Only a FEW chairs so anyone who has some had better bring them as well!

Title: Re: Basingstoke Festival of Transport 2017
Post by: Manky Monkey on May 09, 2017, 04:32:17 PM
So what's the final vehicle tally then? Anybody know? I started with 20 vehicle passes, then they gave me 15 more. I've got 6 left, but 2 are mine, (unless we have a sudden late rush of applicants).
So 25 or so have gone out, but I've forgotten who to! -yes, I do have a serious memory problem.

BikerGran's T5 campervan.
Stumpy's bike or trike, (?), plus his mate.
Terry T & his mates' 5 trikes.
Big Darren & his mates' 3 bikes.
Dslam's 3 or 4 bikes.
Spanners' bike, (?).
Phunkie Hiboy's MG Magnette & his mate's '57 Chevy.
Chris's Chevy S10 pick-up & his mate's Nissan 350Z.
Chris's Dad's Suzuki sidecar outfit.
Stinkey & family's 3 bikes & 3 trikes.
My Pop & bike if I can arrange transport.

Have I missed anyone? Muffin was due to bring his Suzuki Katana, but can't make it. I make that a possible 28.

My Pop won't be there I'm afraid -the transport guy's let me down. With Mr Stinkey's help though, hopefully my bike will be. It's only about a mile from my lock-up to the park. If I start pushing now ...  :P

Sarum hill would be a killer. I used to cycle up it but that was forty five years ago.

I will at least visit and mooch around for a while.  I was very tempted to bring the trike for the day and actually took it out for a gentle ride yesterday. All of three miles and realised it really wouldn't be a good idea. Ho hum, never mind.

How wide is the pop truck?

5 1/2 feet. 13 feet long, (12 feet front to back of the tyres with a 1 foot overhang at the back). About 5" of ground clearance under the cab, 3 or 4" under the rad' grille. Cab height roughly 5 feet. Forgotten the weight, but probably 1 1/2 tons ish.
-I measured it up for the guy who was going to transport it :)

have you tried a local transport guy ? I'm sure somebody will have a transporter truck ? We will see what we can do once we get there anyway ?  Triker Pete came round to see me said Hello to everybody on MMM..he's hoping to pop up to Basingstoke ?  Hey Olds sorry to hear about your health issues ?

Local guys are usually all booked up because it's the transport festival, but I've got one bloke left to try. If not, I'll leave it & just take the bike if you can help with that. Lots of suspension linkages will need re-attaching to move the Pop any distance & the whole thing checked over to make sure nothing's gonna vibrate loose on the way there. Probably more hassle than it's worth :)

So- the weather forcast for Sunday is sunny spells & cloud. I'm happy with that.
I'll be onsite at 9, so will put up the gazebo & banners, but need to nip off with Mr Stinkey when he arrives, to pick up my bike.
So it'd be much appreciated if someone could be there around 9ish to point arrivals in the right direction.
We never have any real parking plan, but usually try for cars down one side of the pitch, trikes down the other & bikes in the middle.
That's about as organised as it's likely to get :)

Right, I've got everything I can think of loaded in my car for the morning & the bike lashed together enough to display. The only thing I haven't got is cake. Donations always welcome. :)
If you're bringing a vehicle tomorrow, please remember your vehicle pass. The marshals on the gate don't usually ask to see them, but you can guarantee they will if you haven't got it.
All entrants get a small brass plaque. They're handed out in the organisers tent at 4.o.clock, so save your entry pass cos they swap it for the plaque.
I'll be there by 9am, but have to nip off with the Stinkey crew when they arrive to fetch my motorcycle, so if someone else can be there by then, that'd be great.
In case anyone has a problem, my mobile number's 07472-397438.
Look forward to seeing as many of you as possible :)

Brilliant turnout Andy, and you thought there wouldn't be anyone with anything to show when you first posted this thread.  :P  I thought it was the most I had ever seen on the Manky stand and I think this was my eighth year, PLUS we had sunshine.

Great to put some faces to names I hadn't met before (or forgotten I had  ;)) and good to meet some regulars again.

Thanks to all those who made the effort to fill the pitch, particularly Dslam and Stinkey who really pulled the stops out. It really made it a great day out. 8)

Hope everyone is home safely and like Rick said, hopefully we will all see each other again next year.  :D

Well, what can I add to that?!
Yeah, after a quiet year last year, I really thought perhaps it was time to call it a day -but I'm really glad we didn't. Yup, our best turn out yet. I'm always amazed that we manage to display a different selection of vehicles every year. I still think we bring the most interesting & varied collection to the club stand field. It's not just rows of the same model in different colours -every machine's unique & fascinating.
And we have the loveliest people too :)
A huge & very heartfelt Thank You to every one of you. Those who brought vehicles, those who stopped by to say Hello, those who helped put up & take down banners & gazebos & load & unload vans. Thanks guys. Same time next year? :)

I took a few snaps on my phone, so will post them tomorrow, but for now, here's the recipients of this year's Mark Juggins, ("Markju"), Memorial trophy. Mr & Mrs Stinkey & their crew, who arrived with a curtain sided lorry full of trikes, like the circus pulling into town. They also very kindly took my bike back to my garage afterwards when I thought I might have to push it home! :)
Well deserved chaps :)

glad you guys, had a good day

after failing to get there yet again,, i now admit defeat  and probably wont bother trying again,,

i didnt get the van  as it turned out my mate decided to do a bit of welding yesterday and set fire to it ,,,, well  the interior insulating foam ,,, he,s ok,, the van  now needs a lot of work,

so this afternoon i ,,dumped the chop,, on a mate and told hime to get rid of it and left hime with a list of all my stuff to liquidate ,

yes,,, i finally  give up ..

i did say to myself a month or so back if i didnt make ,basingstoke, this year  i would give up,,

yes it was a great day. thanks ladies and gents for the conversations, laughs and info shared.
great turn out and i to believe that the stand draws the most people and keeps them there for longer than most talking to all the pleasant people from the forum  ;D
nice meeting up with old friends, making new ones and putting faces to names. roll on next year.
heres some snaps from my phone.

We had car trouble right from the off, glad we persisted and made it to this years show. Enjoyed meeting with old and new friends, managed to get the car back home without breaking down completely, ignition coils breaking down, ordered a set of ebay for 29 quid better than i was expecting. Looking forward to next year. Note to self must try harder to build something.

Looks like you all had a great show. I sit here embarrassed for not showing up. I'm ashamed of myself and will beat myself up for days over it. Next year I will be there with project and so will you Mike. Chin up, both of them  ;D

Great to see everyone on Sunday!  Been laid up with a tummy bug since I got home so haven't posted my photos yet but they'll be up soon - only on facebook though as I can never seem to post more than one or two on here whatever I do to resize them!

I'll put a link here, my facebook albums are public, anyone can see them.  Most of them are probably very similar to what everyone else has posted!
