Title: 1968 vw fastback
Post by: flc on January 01, 2017, 10:53:06 AM
My current ongoing project,

To say I was gutted is an understatement, I'd spent 4 years building this car every spare penny etc. Just running in the full on performance motor I'd built, when I lost it on a bend going to work. Apparently a notorious black spot, lucky for me the road was empty at the time so only the car (and my pride) was hurt
. Still wanting an aircooled vw I looked around for something a bit different and the fasty turned up for sale on the next street ( coincidence or ment to be?) typically the car looked really solid... to be contd

You'll have to forgive my posting as I'm on an iPhone and it's a bit of a nightmare compared using a computer,
The back story on the car was, it was being prepared for a respray when it was put in a lock up and forgotten about , in around 1985, to be dug out in late 2013! All good so far, came with old buff logbook too, researching about these things and whilst parts are available they are scarce and expensive when you do find them, ( great  ::) not like me to buy a odd ball)
With this in mind I went to look at the car and it was good in all the dear areas like dashboard top ,inner sills floors (which look similar to beetle but are vastly different and a pair of repo pans would run into about £700 compared to £150 for a bug.
There was some rot to the front spare wheel area and some crumbling to the very edge of the drivers pan, a very lucky find on eBay got me a Californian front clip for a ton, talk about ment to be , I've never seen another! For any amount . And she is one large bag of rocking horse poo
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-07/14EF026C-8C3E-4580-BA38-355367DE2C59_zps4dmhcn28.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-07/14EF026C-8C3E-4580-BA38-355367DE2C59_zps4dmhcn28.jpg.html)
And another picture once really careful fitting (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-07/103527FD-30BD-4859-9374-FBD395205AB0_zpszcgugw3q.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-07/103527FD-30BD-4859-9374-FBD395205AB0_zpszcgugw3q.jpg.html)

(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-09/8ED86C77-4353-4F3B-949B-A421A6343A25_zps91b2h8ri.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-09/8ED86C77-4353-4F3B-949B-A421A6343A25_zps91b2h8ri.jpg.html)
And finally done, fair to say I was nervous doing this as any mistakes would have ment the end of this project
Almost seems a waste to fit such a nice rare part ,then to expose it to our crappy weather

I'll pretty much skip through the long ,painful/expensive resto of the shell with a lot of pics except for the purchase of a shrinker/stretcher to enable the fabrication of a lot of parts on this car, a dear but so satisfying tool to use , the floor whilst fairly solid did have some rot on the edges(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-05/IMG_20150518_150036_zpsmhsehuts.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-05/IMG_20150518_150036_zpsmhsehuts.jpg.html) and the stretcher allowed me to make these repair pieces (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-06/IMG_20150611_105351_zps15elxxnb.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-06/IMG_20150611_105351_zps15elxxnb.jpg.html)

Pretty much ended up doing the whole pan edge like this, was really happy with how it turned out

The beast in action (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-06/received_10204185047526511_zps6ejdbsjm.jpeg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-06/received_10204185047526511_zps6ejdbsjm.jpeg.html)
It works by stretching the metal angle up to 1 mm thick and making curves , internal or external depending on which jaws are fitted, ideal for wheel arches or screen corners or like me floorpan repairs, I also used it for wing parts and general tweaking of repair panels

Ooh, nice tool! :)
Not a huge fan of Beetles, but the Variants are nice looking things. I admire anyone who can deal with that level of rot without giving up :)

Thanks mr, the tool is great best thing I own ... after the lathe ;D I've had a few times when I could have given up and scrapped the lot, but as they are so rare I just took a deep breath and carried on, I've still to get to the fun bits like motor stuff and handling improvements, it's been good to post this as it's reminding me of how far this car has come

Odd looking breather vent is due to engine getting it's cooling air from slots in the rears wings which also takes in water if it's raining, so the air tubs fill with water and releases through these funny one way flap vents, no wonder they rotted so badly

Loving the repair sections, nothing more satisfying than making something by hand and then looking back on the old pictures. Well done.

Thanks folks, it has been way more of a job than I originally wanted, but once you start etc.....
A few good things happened along the way
The shrink er has been an ace purchase and I also re commissioned a pillar drill I've had for years, was given it less motor and tried over the years to buy one( they were always way too much money) then one day a new one on eBay £20 result ;D

So then after all the body repairs were finished ,I moved on to refitting the body back on the pan,
It uses a gasket that was unique to type 3's ,unavailable these days, so I've had to buy an over length bug on and pie cut the corners and glue the lot in place using rtv sealer, what a fun task that was,
Then attach the two together with what feels like 20,000 m8 bolts , I never took any pics of this ordeal but it is a momentous occasion in any aircooled vw resto  8)

It's now wearing three wings that have a unique (typically) type 3 seal that's preformed, I managed to buy a roll of similar stuff from a company called woolies and again trimmed to a nice fit
Worth looking them up if you need any kind of automotive seal, as they have just about all or similar for a fraction of original parts
Picture time
A lucky find ( seem to have had a load on this build)
A brand new in box sun pro rev counter for a tenner wuhoo
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-12/F86061F5-6357-4BBE-B339-18692F17FBF3_zpsz7g6kli9.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-12/F86061F5-6357-4BBE-B339-18692F17FBF3_zpsz7g6kli9.jpg.html)

As you can see fits a treat in the time clock hole in my dash and looks close to the others,
To say I was delighted is getting close ( I live a sheltered life) it's even got a shift light ;D

An intermediate gearbox mount
As the aircooled cars engine is mounted to the gearbox only, the box mounts need to be spot on. I'd already fitted up rated mounts but this adds an extra bit of security with all the extra power my motor makes ( close to treble) I copied the design from one a mate had bought and knocked one up the rubber ISO mounts came from my local city seals and bearing shop, total cost was about a tenner. Again deep joy was felt ;D actually fitted straight on too

Woolies are also useful for headlinings and trim, as i found out when I had my Maestro.

Next find was this gear-lever, a copy of a 60's empi race part, that's cranked back so it's easy to reach,
They have some issues with reverse lock out not being effective and going into reverse instead of second
It uses a compression spring which is too soft, fitting a stronger one makes the case crack , the answer turned out to be a piece of fuel pipe in place of the spring, works perfectly and feels like a modern shifter, I bought it because I liked the design, the fact it now works is a bonus  :P ;D ::)

Do you rate it? I got this due to removing the vw stock heating that works from exhaust heat, the performance exhaust has no heat ,but I need to drive in all weather .
I had it running on the floor and it was kicking heat out.
Looking forward to getting this fitted

In my van it's for heating the living area, if it's a similar capacity I think you might find it too much just for the interior of a car - it has setting from 1 to 7 - we start it on about 4 then turn it down to 1 once it's warmed the place up - turn it off before going to bed as it's too warm!

But maybe this is a different type, I'd never heard of them before buying my van last May.

Thanks for that, yes it's a bus type, so will probably be a bit too much, I'll try it and see. My bug was a pared down fast road car with no carpets or sound deadening etc and it was freezing most of the time , proper ice box at least I can turn this off once I'm melting  :)

I also have this to fit,(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/9F185105-E3A6-495C-A232-07BEC4090F8E_zpseqtwycxu.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2015-01/9F185105-E3A6-495C-A232-07BEC4090F8E_zpseqtwycxu.jpg.html)

It's a camber compensator, which stops the outside wheel from folding under the car under hard cornering, this effect could have been part of the reason I crashed my bug

Yes ,basic, does describe most of the cars design  :)
Apparently they make night and day difference, not had chance to try one , as this arrived the day after I'd crashed the bug  :(, what camper do you have?

So does that work in a similar way to an anti roll bar? What does it attach to?

Title: Re: 1968 vw fastback

They attach to the gearbox in the middle, and the outer end just press against the axle tubes ,preventing them from falling, when the car jacks during corners, I'll try to find a better discription

Ahh, so is it sprung steel? It'd need a little springiness or the ride would be really harsh wouldn't it?

Yes it's just a transverse leaf spring, like opposite of a triumph herald or spitfire. Apparently they suffer similar problems
Keeps things in place with a bit of flexibility, will be interesting to see how it rides/handles

Not posted much this las week, but have been grafting away at all the small boring jobs that swallow weeks of time
So far I've refitted the carpets/ drivers seat
Made an extra length battery earth cable
Refitted the fuse box
Sorted the resulting non working items ( got to love wiring in old vehicles)
I now have working lights / indicators/wipers
Fitted camber compensator

(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/D2C12227-7FF8-4304-B80E-CCB2668D36F2_zpst1rqysct.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/D2C12227-7FF8-4304-B80E-CCB2668D36F2_zpst1rqysct.jpg.html)

Fitted rear bumper
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/A9116548-297D-490D-A9F5-431492E90E94_zpslkp7eztc.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/A9116548-297D-490D-A9F5-431492E90E94_zpslkp7eztc.jpg.html)
Front bumper with Overiders
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-11/7A7E2C6C-4C05-49A3-B86C-C6E4FB528F96_zpscrxg1sxq.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-11/7A7E2C6C-4C05-49A3-B86C-C6E4FB528F96_zpscrxg1sxq.jpg.html)
Rare part, I have some for the rear as well
Also sorted handbrake
Then on to my biggest dilemma
Wheels
Seems like this is my Achilles heel.
The car came with stock rims/hub caps and a set of Porsche pattern fusch copies
Now original fusch wheels (1980's 911) are upward of £1500 a set!!! Copies around £300 so I converted my drums to Porsche pattern ( 5 x 130 pcd) and bought front discs to match

small boring jobs that swallow weeks of time
-yup, I've got a whole carful of those!

What's the big pocket in the rear panel? Air intake for the engine bay? Never seen one with the wing off before.

Title: Re: 1968 vw fastback
Post by: flc on January 22, 2017, 09:52:01 PM
Yes the devil is in the details  ;)
Yes your right it's a big cooling air intake odd design
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/D8518472-474E-4066-A83E-F41B234E3C89_zps9tvstzhd.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/D8518472-474E-4066-A83E-F41B234E3C89_zps9tvstzhd.jpg.html)
The vents in the outer wing feed the box that's feeding the cooling air to the motor
It also has a flap at the bottom that allows collected water out (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-06/226532D6-765B-4827-98C8-991A1B547E29_zpsqx7himig.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2016-06/226532D6-765B-4827-98C8-991A1B547E29_zpsqx7himig.jpg.html)
The bit on the left is a piece of rubber with a metal lid, flap opens to let water out and flaps shut when motor is drawing air, needless to say they Rot like f@*^

Nice motor Archie , is that a Brasilia?
It's been a nightmare choosing rims for this , I'll get to my compromise on my wheels issues ...
Not really feeling the fake Porsche wheels, I started to look at other options, wanting to keep the og stud pattern if possible ,
I looked at the most odd unloved rims....
Marathon rims (to celebrate the bug out selling old henrys model 't')
But there only 4.5" wide meaning skinny tyres
A mate In to vw's told me about reriming, so bought some wider vw rims (6") to cut up, I've still to try this
When locally a set of spider mags came up for sale really cheaply (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/705442C1-B921-4634-B562-1519372EE7C4_zpsfvjxzf3j.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/705442C1-B921-4634-B562-1519372EE7C4_zpsfvjxzf3j.jpg.html)
Bingo they will be perfect, possibly the most underrated vw rim, over used done to death over the last few decades, so they are available cheaply, which pleases me loads, I have another set on its way,
I'll still try modifying a pair of the marathon rims later on and sell the pretend Porsche rims to fund more upgrades, here's a picture with marathon on rear empi 8 ( spider mags) on front (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/170D00C4-8445-49D1-9698-DF90459E8D05_zpsvxdqvfju.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-01/170D00C4-8445-49D1-9698-DF90459E8D05_zpsvxdqvfju.jpg.html)
Jury still out more later

It's been parked up for nearly 5 years since I started messing around with vw's!
I don't want to start working on it till the cars finished, as I don't have the time/money for both and one will suffer..... hard though

It's the next size up called a variant - brazil only model. We had a Brasilia here as well imported at the same time, but VW bought it and it's gone off to the museum in Stuttgart / Wherever it is.

If any of the wheels do tickle your fancy, let me know and I'll sort a price on them - something like these - http://www.justkampers.com/catalog/product/view/id/21989/s/rb-602-15602-standard-style-wheel-6-x-15-4-x-130-vw-beetle-1968-on/category/651/

Back in 1972 me and the family went of to South Africa, me to work in a Steel works. Needing transport, myself and another guy I had met on the way out, went down to the only local car dealer, whose stock of for sale vehicles amounted to just two! one a V W Fastback like yours, same colour too, and the other, a white, Mk. 2 Cortina GT. Now we both fancied the VW, particularly as it had an air cooled motor, and it was rather warm on the High Veldt, so we flipped a coin for first choice...and guess what?.. I got the bloody Ford!! but to be fair I did drive it from just south of Jo. burg to Cape Town later...........ho, hum, nearest I got to buying a V Dub.. Morrag

Cool story,
Can't tell you if you missed out as I've never even driven a type 3 ::)
A guy I spoke to this summer has a South African 68 fasty ,that he was told was originally a police car down there . His car was rock solid and totally original, must be nice to not have them rot before your very eyes.

I think big merc's don't rust wherever they live
Been a crazy week on the fastback but some progress has been made... sort of
I've finally decided on wheels, been bugging me for the last two years
Gone back to the pretend Porsche wheels, I almost sold them as a guy was interested in the whole package
Wheels disks rear brake set up, as I was taking the pictures I realised it was all new or in perfect order, got me to thinking, just fit them and be done messing, plus the guy was in north Scotland so postage would have made it expensive, so we mutually agreed to leave it, and on they went (http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-02/4263B66C-7899-4CB5-BDA7-8B146C689CE5_zpslli3eepj.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-02/4263B66C-7899-4CB5-BDA7-8B146C689CE5_zpslli3eepj.jpg.html)
But..... I'd fitted 165/65/15 up front( nice sized tyres , not too low) and had some healthy 195/50's for the rear
Oops turns out I should have checked (using this brilliant comparison site)
https://tiresize.com/comparison/
It allows you to put in two different sizes and compare them has pictures of them next to each other ( I played for ages on it ;D) turned out the rear wheels where loads smaller than the front
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-02/56E9E3A9-48F0-4129-8BF0-7E441798F85E_zpsveeyyvck.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-02/56E9E3A9-48F0-4129-8BF0-7E441798F85E_zpsveeyyvck.jpg.html)
Hard to really tell in this picture but I didn't like it, I had some full profile new tyres so tried them
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-02/51B543BD-8873-4661-B332-18E4CEBAF1D9_zpsxgtouutu.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-02/51B543BD-8873-4661-B332-18E4CEBAF1D9_zpsxgtouutu.jpg.html)
Better but too skinny for the size motor I'm running
Back to playing on the compare site for a bit  :D and decided to go for 185/60/15 which are half inch taller than the front and 1 1/2" wider , with the messing around done.. err I mean important decision made I got on with fitting the parts

Did one side at a time, the hubs/drums were already converted to five studs and just need the studs pressing bank in
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-02/0A7328F3-CD29-4E51-A617-BC684299CBF5_zpsckxvqfnk.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-02/0A7328F3-CD29-4E51-A617-BC684299CBF5_zpsckxvqfnk.jpg.html)
then moved on to the fun bit off fitting all the shiny bits up front

(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-02/A9C4B331-D824-41D0-80D9-EE9A08D2EE93_zpsqhca4ihw.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-02/A9C4B331-D824-41D0-80D9-EE9A08D2EE93_zpsqhca4ihw.jpg.html)
Archie also helped me out (bless him) with new flexi hoses for the front as I couldn't find type 3 specific ones
( turns out they are same as beetle) thanks Archie your a star  ;D
Bits all fitted
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-02/E568D450-179D-40CB-AD67-EF2A57BDCFB5_zpshhbkxe9f.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-02/E568D450-179D-40CB-AD67-EF2A57BDCFB5_zpshhbkxe9f.jpg.html)
Lovely.
I may have an oval drum, not sure yet as still need to bleed up and test,
Which is where I'll probably find the master cylinder is buggered ::)
So that's the story so far I now have enough spare tyres and wheels to start my own shop  :D and I'm not entirely happy with the fakes but they may grow on me... time will tell but at least it's another item ticked off the list

If it was mine I think I'd save up for some taller wheels ? But I'm a fan of using what ya got !
Isn't it nice putting on new shiny bits though ?  ;)

I know what your saying, the car will be a couple of inches lower once the motor is back in, so should settle down and lose the big gaps, I may end up adjusting the front ride height once it's sorted ( easy job on type 3's as they're on splines) but yes was lovely fitting all the shiny bits  ;D

just reminded me of my old VW days. my old fastback with Porsche wheel trims and my never finished Hot engined Beetle sat in the garage. Looking at the picture of my son we think its 1982, that's when he dislocated his shoulder, first day home  ;)

Not much progress to report, a few jobs started and lots of problems found, first off is the battery problem...
I used the battery from my bug , vaguely remember something about having to make new leads??? I put the battery in at night in the dark !!!!

Eventually after struggling to get the starter to work, new solenoid, lots of messing, finally tried changing battery, after a few seconds the chargers burst into flames!!?? Hmmm tried another charger just went pop??? Tried test meter that's buggered too, fed up now and on eBay . Had a closer look at the battery it's in wrong soddin way round... what a div , looks like new batteries have terminals on opposite sides. When fitting battery in the dark the leads would not reach so I must have turned it round so they fit. I can laugh about it now  ::) ;D was fed up at the time tho. A new charger and test meter later I have working electrics, whuhoo, then started bleeding brakes seems that being stood for thirty years hasn't agreed with the flexi pipes all four have collapsed internally so a quick bleed has turned into a full brake system resto..... more later

So where was I ? Oh yes the brakes
(http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa219/FLC_photo/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-02/A9C4B331-D824-41D0-80D9-EE9A08D2EE93_zpspkpsfg4k.jpg) (http://s199.photobucket.com/user/FLC_photo/media/Mobile%20Uploads/2017-02/A9C4B331-D824-41D0-80D9-EE9A08D2EE93_zpspkpsfg4k.jpg.html)
Lovely shiny bits , ended up needing all four flexi pipes a couple of short metal ones a wheel cylinder and new rubber connecting pipe , from reservoir to master cylinder ( this has to be correct brake fluid resistant stuff) as it rots fuel pipe very quickly, yes found out the hard way, hmmm after cleaning it all up I now have working brakes

Worth the effort though for good, reliable braking. Pretty too :)

Whoops already covered the brakes  :D
With that all sorted I moved onto the next project. An eberspacher heater

They work like garage space heaters, fuel ( petrol) is pumped into the heater by a special metered pump, its then ignited by a combined glow/spark plug , which heats up an element and blown fan air is used to take the heat into the passenger area.
There are many safety features on the heaters so are fairly safe if serviced regularly.
Looking to fit this in my fastback was fun as they were ment for busses so all the other parts I had to fabricate myself , plus chop big holes on my rare car! :o
Some pictures

90 degree 6" diameter tube found in the skip at work, bit of panel beating stretched it to fit over the end of the heater

Inside shot, ended up just above my left foot , I'll get a finished picture later, still needed was an exhaust, exiting through left inner wing, which needed to clear the wheel and other bits as they would get hot! Took the usual three attempts, this was a little more complicated than I imagined, should have known better  ;D
But now have lovely toasty heat in the car, sounds like a rocket when it fires up
