Had my engine looked at today by an "expert". He mentioned a few things. Coil should be vertical not horizontal, that way it gets immersed in the oil for cooling better. HT leads should not be wrapped together, seems they could interfere with each other. Brand spanking new coil and leads. All silicone high performance s**t stuff. Any thoughts? or is he trying it on ?

I can imagine the leads interfering with each other - had this at work many years ago, all the leads, computer ones, electric ones, phone ones, were stowed in the same conduit - and every time the phone rang, the computer screen filled with squiggles! 

 :) Heard both of those ideas Steve, but no idea if they're true or not.

The " modern" type coil shown here will be fine horizontally mounted, and as for your leads, I would not recommend wrapping them in with LT or other subsidiary wiring, but ign. leads together, can't see a problem, particularly as they fire individually and at 12k volts, interference! nah, unless you run radio level kit too close....Morrag

The coil is fine as it is, 99% of BMC and British Leyland cars had the coil mounted in that plane. As for the leads, I have run them tyrapped together and with separators with no adverse effect. I would personally run them with separators just for the fact they look a lot tidier, they can be found easily on eBay or the pinto ones are available from Burton. But as Morrag says, don't run the low tension lead in there with them (or with the king lead, which it looks like, from the picture, you have done).

What the bloke is saying has a small element of truth in it.
If I remember correctly, the main reason for mounting oil filled coils vertically was to stop the oil leaking out when the coil got hot but I don't think that's been much of a problem since the 50's.
Rover V8 ignition leads were supposed to be routed with seperators and in a certain way so that one lead crossed over another and not run side by side. Think it was 5 & 7, to prevent the possibility of electrical induction causing number 7 plug to spark when 5 did and while the fuel/air mix was being drawn in.

Start the thing up and run it ? It will soon let you know ? ::)

It runs fine, but does wet a plug every so often. Its running a tad rich, waiting on new carb gaskets, to rebuild. Thought I had sold this but this guy keeps wasting my time with nit picks, like this.

Unless you really need it gone, tell him him when he buys it he can do all the things that makes him unhappy about it, in the mean time its fine as it is

People who nitpick like that are too anal and will be a pain forver more expecting a life time warranty with the vehicle .

As said above coil is fine like that and was exactly how Escort vans were mounted excpet lower so you could flood them out with water ;)

It Hurt a bit, but I told him to take a walk. So, its here for Christmas  :D

Unfortunately, it doesn't pay to be nice these days mate. People take advantage of it, though I live in hope that if I'm good to them, they'll be good in return. If he'd really wanted it, he'd have bought it, not messed you about for weeks.
