Title: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: stinkey on August 08, 2016, 08:40:40 AM
Well after months of searching and advice on what not to buy ( many thanks to Kev (KAPRI) for his patience too? ) my son purchased this yesterday ,we had a nice leisurely drive into deepest Somerset to check this out,I saw all the dodgy bits and what needed doing ? My son saw no more days of boredom and a use for some bits I still had lying about in the shed  ::)
The chop came with a lot of history/MOTs and another engine ( smaller size though ?) it's got a low mileage GPZ 1100 lump (20000 miles ?) the frame looks like a professional job till you get to the back end ? And all the brackets are of the pigeon poo type :-[
Plus a big box of electrics and bits..the plan is to use what we have ?

looks good mate. cant wait to see what it turns into. is he as fond of holes as you?  ;) ;D

is he as fond of holes as you?
Rear mudguard suggests someone was.
Looks to be a good base to build on (once welding has been sorted) and I'm sure that it will turn out fine.

Don't think he likes holes ? Thankfully those are just stick on ones ? Because the petrol tank was covered in them  ;D

Welds on the rear end definitely not as good as round the head stock, think Taylor has a bit of clean up and re-do in that area.

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: minimutly on August 09, 2016, 05:12:19 PM
The welding on that triangular plate is on the bit of metal next door to it.

It seems they cut the original axle plate and then added their new extension onto it ? :'(

Taylor's been working the other side of the frame tonight..

So how old's Taylor? Is this his first chop?

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: stinkey on August 11, 2016, 07:09:28 PM
He's 34 ..nope ..his first chop was a buell based one..then he built another buell engined chop..both now sold..he's also built some hotrods and a trike

Taylor has ground down the frame and primed it..and iv given him a wheel to try..before he decides what to do with the back end of the frame?

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: Manky Monkey on August 14, 2016, 07:41:58 PM
Shorten it?

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: stinkey on August 14, 2016, 07:44:20 PM
Why ? He wants a chop..not a bobber? It's only a short chop anyway 8)

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: Manky Monkey on August 14, 2016, 07:55:01 PM
:) I haven't seen a frame with the long, pointy tails before. Is there any provision for wheel adjustment, or is it shaft drive?

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: stinkey on August 16, 2016, 08:02:25 AM
Slight amount of adjustment ..most likely use a skateboard wheel or another sprocket for adjusting ?

I have a sprung loaded sprocket adjuster kicking about if you decide to go that way buddy

I think so. I'll get a pic of it over the weekend for you!

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: Clive on August 19, 2016, 02:30:44 PM
Now I've dug it out, it's not the prettiest, the welding is worse than mine (bought off someone on another forum. Yes there are other forums), but would be a good adjuster with a little work. The sprocket has a decent bearing fitted, and is adjustable in height. Just let me know if you want it, or will pass.

Taylor has been tinkering today..taken one of the ugly side posts out (which was in line of the chain ?) and used it for a central post..

I use 600 x 600.

Unfortunately it just gives me the percentage size ?  And sometimes it doesn't allow me to reduce it :-[
Rather build stuff than use computers 8)

Actually he's taking his taking time..for once his budget is low for this build ::) and thanks to Clive for sending the chain adjuster ,cheers dude..

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: stinkey on August 25, 2016, 07:16:39 AM
So the saga continues, the rear sprocket we had on the old wheel didn't match the front sprocket so ended up buying a new rear blank from Mark at powerlinks ( Ringwood ) new tyre has arrived so just some holes to be drilled in the sprocket to enable us to carry on ?

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: stinkey on August 28, 2016, 07:01:39 PM
Wheel has to be welded up ( holes in rim for the old slicks ) so that's at my mates..
So Taylor fitted and welded in a new down tube so we can redo the rear engine mounts ..plus he mounted the front mudguard

Taylor's been slowly tinkering away at the chop, fitted one side exhaust and pushed it outside to view the stance (but not as far as MM likes to push his bike ? ::)) like you do,and since this pic we've raised the front up an inch but may need more ?

I'm not so keen on that.

Same here, would move the lower arm further up the pedal shaft towards the frame, less chance of catching on something then.  Still a nice build, no offence meant.

Well Taylor SOLD this one ages ago now it seems ? Used the money to finish off his house extension  :-[
Fast forward to Febuary 2019..."DAD I'm bored,I've seen this on eBay,what d,ya think?"  >:(
I think .." Here we go AGAIN ?" So on the 2nd of Febuary I find myself being taken to Canvey Island to pick up a rolling frame project ..deju vue  time..
What looks like an early Hardup Choppers frame, rather chunky, bandit 600 engine, front end and back wheel? All for £380..
Popped into Southampton on the way back home..he wanted to see another bike..a 1200 bandit running driving ( MOT just run out ) has a donar bike ;D up for £950?. The young guy didn't know much about bikes..and his girlfriend had slung him out and wanted the bike gone! so Taylor didn't take long to haggle him down..£700 agreed including delivery  :D
Skip forward 2 weeks..17th feb..so I pop round to Taylor's to pick up the front yokes..in the mean time he's built a new workbench ( he sold mine just before Xmas  :o,wasn't going to do another project ?) and started stripping the donar bike..

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?

So here we go AGAIN ?

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?

So after 2 hours we had the bike taken apart and jet washed the engine..

I've been given a list of things to do/ sort out..headstock is a harley one,so correct bearings have been purchased..just need to redo the stem bolt..basically machine the top ( replicate factory settings) but 10mm further down the shaft..buy some VERY thin masking tape for doing curves..and something else ? ::)

Won't take long..engine swap, make up the exhaust, new chain, plug back the wiring together, fuel lines and new carb air filters, and go for it? Then road test..followed by strip down for paint ;D

take note son..it's all rather friendly and calm on here..no back stabbing like some sites? ::) just see how many views the pics get..on this small site..and today Taylor's started on the dreaded wiring loom

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: Taylors chops on March 05, 2019, 06:55:48 PM
The wiring loom is not to bad actually dad it’s just hard trying to hide and neaten everything up as it’s all big and bulky not sure if I’m going to do away with the standard clocks I think it should still run if the Rev counter and speedo aren’t connected it will look better without them but is definitely handy knowing how fast your going etc for now I shall connect everything back up and step back and look to see what it looks like but I do prefer a clean front end ? Anyone’s thoughts?

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: Manky Monkey on March 05, 2019, 07:20:06 PM
The standard gauges are pretty big aren't they. Even just off the shelf chrome mini clocks mounted in the same place would be less obtrusive.
I like the overall chunkiness of it :)

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: BikerGran on March 05, 2019, 08:55:36 PM
I agree the standard gauges just don't go with the rugged look of the bike.

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: scannerzer on March 05, 2019, 09:01:36 PM
the proportions of this bike are perfect. i love the heavy frame tubes. how about running the wiring inside the frame

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: Taylors chops on March 05, 2019, 09:29:37 PM
I would run the loom inside the frame if I could but the original loom is far too big and has lots of large connection blocks etc I can hid most of the loom underneath the tank and inside the electric box I will be making plus I’m trying to do it on a cheap budget otherwise I would have a custom loom made etc using what I’ve got already etc but definitely think the clocks will go. Will it pass mot etc and if I remove the clocks and gauges etc I assume it will still run?

No. While the speedometer is not checked for accuracy at the MOT, but one that is obviously inoperative or is missing, is a fail.
Speedometer accuracy is however checked at MSVA.

Hi everyone I’ve been busy today tidying up the wiring loom I’ve mounted the starter solenoid and fuse box to the frame under the seat where I shall be making the electric box shortly going to make a start on modifying the standard exhaust tomorrow, I decided to ditch the clocks and gauges I think it looks a lot better without them pictures to follow tomorrow

Good move with the clocks! :)
Looking great so far.

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: Olds on March 10, 2019, 10:11:38 AM
Yep.
Think the minimum you need is an mini speedo with bulb in it and a main beam warning light somewhere. Indicator warning lights, not required if you can see them flash from riders position.

Probably wrong but it looks like a CC stretched fat bob for a sportster.

I was told it was a custom Harley sportster tank I’ve had the exact one before on the previous chop on this page lol there nice and holds a lot of fuel and has a nice curvetry it came with a new Harley petrol cap and key and new Harley fuel tap all for £120 the tanks alone new without anything are £300 so I’m happy

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: Olds on March 13, 2019, 05:20:02 PM
A good buy.
The one on my trike is a modified CC tank that I originally fitted to my sportster, from the days before they did stretch tanks. Think they used to call it the sports bob.

Hi yeah it’s 4 going into a horizontal pipe and there will be a 2.5” pipe coming out the bottom in the centre vering to the right side which will then go into the exhaust can that came with the original bandit should sound nice time will tell not long now until I start her back up hopefully finish off the mocking up of the exhaust this weekend hopefully dad will come over and make the seat pan and make cardboard templates for electric box pictures to follow

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: Taylors chops on April 01, 2019, 07:49:08 PM
Lol not quite but won’t be long need to modify one side of the frame at the rear on the chain side as it needs a little more clearance for the chain I’ve offset the wheel by 5mm but any more than that it wouldn’t look correct from behind plus probably would effect the handling. Next job is making the electric box after I try to get it running this weekend hopefully it will fire straight up everything is working and engine turns over need to get a new throttle housing and grip as one of my dogs decided she was hungry whilst it was hanging down so if anyone has a spare plastic throttle housing what sits underneath the grip etc for a bandit or a Suzuki gsf etc that would be great eBay want to much money for a bit of plastic 😂🥴

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: Taylors chops on April 05, 2019, 04:49:51 PM
I’m hoping not too loud it should be pretty much the same as standard as it has original exhaust silencer on it etc I’m exspecting it to leak slightly out of the exhaust ports as one of the bolt hole threads got threaded and I had to re tap thread but not sure if it is enough time will tell

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: Taylors chops on April 08, 2019, 07:37:38 PM
I need a little information from any of you I have been running the chop now a couple of times and there is a vacuum pipe that comes out from the top of the carb which used to be connected to the original petrol tank question is what do I do with this pipe ? Because if I block it off with my finger the revs go right up I’m not sure if I should connect it somewhere or just put a small air type filter on the end so if any of you guys have had this situation before please let me know what you did etc thanks Taylor

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: Stix on April 08, 2019, 10:25:45 PM
Reckon you need to block it off and then re ajust the carbs to lower the revs, if you leave it open it will allow air into the carbs making it ru  weak,

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: Taylors chops on April 17, 2019, 11:58:48 AM
So I’ve blocked off the vacuum pipe it runs a lot better now but on idle it seems to idle fine for a minute or so but then fluctuates up and then back Down again could this be down to putting k&n style air filters on or maybe the carbs need setting up for these air filters any ideas fellas

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: Stix on April 17, 2019, 02:53:12 PM
Check the carb mounting rubbers for air leaks,  one trick is to have it running and squirt wd40 round the rubbers that can help show up an air leak as it will run better while spraying it, these rubbers do appear to deteriate over time so might need replacing.
Also if adding k&n filters you will need to up the size of the jets or it will run weak and possibly burn a piston, you have modded the exhaust to a more free flowing one so now with the filters you are getti g more air in and need to add more fuel.

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: Taylors chops on April 18, 2019, 07:58:44 PM
Any ideas what size jets I will need to upgrade them to etc

Title: Re: Taylor's new project ?
Post by: Stix on April 18, 2019, 09:30:48 PM
None what so ever as i do t know what you are starting with, i would try a couple of sizes bigger for the main and probably the same for the pilot, but it will be a guessing game at best, can you not find a forum for the suzuki 600  and ask on  there cos it will have been done plenty of times, have a look at the jets and get the numbers off them so you can tell them what you have and allow them to give you info based on the starting poi nt.
