i,v just bid on some ignition bits i found on good old ,,flea bay,,  so when i collect the pig later this week i should be able to make a start on it

had a bit of good news  been told that the engine was overhauled  around 500 miles before she was parked up

Sounds like you'll be on the road before me Mike! -oh, & hardtail.  :)

Might still be worth soaking the bores for a while before turning the engine over, but then you know this already.

Take no notice of  MM (he wants to get his on the road first  ;)).  Soft tail. Keep it simple for now, just get the on the road and ride that pig.

Looks like it could possibly be an old Metamachex one way to tell is there will be a number stamped into the brace on the frame spindle mounting. I have an old catalogue with the part numbers so can check for you ;)

Suggest you have a think about going down the Permanent Magnet Alternator route.

Its an upgrade using more reliable, and potentially more easily available, components.

its all a fookin mess and none of the wire colours match up to any diagrams that i can find

Ha, you're lucky if they are different colours and you can trace them - when my little yammy was stolen and dumped, the buggers cut right through the wiring loom at the front - when a mate came to sort it out, every wire was brown!  Took him hours of trial and error and some odd results!

Suggest you have a think about going down the Permanent Magnet Alternator route.

On this site there is dimensions and how to make the adapter plate if you go down that route. Probably some other good info too

Get some pics up, you can do without the starter, and perhaps the casing can be repaired?

The problem is you could spend a lot of money on buying a motor, to find its not quite what you were sold. With stuff of that vintage you need to know it, or rebuild one yourself. At least its a twin, not four ;)

Wahey, good news. Strangely, hearing that a fellow builder is giving in makes me feel depressed, or at least dissapointed. Is there a medical term for it? Proxy project loss?

Title: Re: THE BLACK PIG,
Post by: Olds on November 10, 2016, 08:55:19 AM
Agreed.
Mike , a couple of ideas if you are having probs with the kicker. Try to look for a longer one. Many Yamaha (and perhaps other jap) bikes share common splines or if you still want to go the bike pedal route, fab an extension using the bike crank arm.
Perhaps lower the compression ratio a bit.

Take the plugs out, kicks over really easily then! But seriously, didn't early xs,s have a decompression lever on the left hand rocker cover? That could be a way round the problem.

That's good news Mike. ;) If there's no rush to get it on the road, just plug away at it as & when you get the urge/parts.
The starter gears come up on Ebay once in a while, (I think mine went to either Archie or Tom's projects). Or try Mike's XS in the States, (serendipitous or what!). They do all sorts of upgrade parts, like a longer 5th gear, so you can cruise at lower revs.
I wondered about fitting a decompressor on mine, just to be a bit different. Tony Oily Bike commented on it somewhere in my build thread with a couple of links. I think you need to change the valve as well cos it has a lug cast into it that the decomp' thingy connects to. I bought a 2nd kickstart lever for mine & am in the process of reducing the diameter of the arm to take a stainless tube that'll slide inside a Harley rubber pedal.
Keep at it Mike. You'll get there.

"Mikes XS" in the states has an outlet in Holland called Heiden Tuning. (Being in Holland it makes it easier re postal charges and VAT)

GOOD NEWS,, i couldn,t sleep again last night and spent alot of time thinking ,, so first thing this morning i went up the yard and it was quite a pleasent start to the day at around  8am so i wheeled the pig outside  and sorted out all the ignition bits and asembled what i had  got the battery charged and rigged up a direct ignition feed put the fuel test tank on  and the left carb flooded but a  light tap stopped that  everything was roughly set  ,, full choke,,, first kick  she FIRED UP  and ran well  but dosnt like coming off choke so i need another look at the carbs ,, i then  got brave a popped her into first, and eased the clutch out and we flew off up the yard ,,,OHHH  SH1T,,,,, no brakes connected  ::) ::)  any i dumped the throttle shut and took a couple of miles of tread of me boots  came back down the yard and  refitted the rear brake rod ,, and had another go ,, so yes she is ,,ALIVE,, after her long slumber

the biggest thing i found is  she is very high geared  even in first gear   any idea,s ??  she has standard front and rear sprockets ,,

Title: Re: THE BLACK PIG, ,,SERIOUS UPDATE!!!!!

OK,GUYS

i,ll come  clean

i,v been having tests  for a number of things  including  the C, desease , i,m now on medication for that  and being monitored ,

but i also have yet another hernia  problem which is also being monitored,, (takes the total to 3 )

the result of all this is on medical advice  == no strain,, and the doctor (who i get on with and i value his advice ) definetly NO KICK STARTING MOTORCYCLES

SO the black pig has to go asap  if only to remove the temptation of trying to see if i can kick it ,,

as most of you know i have put some time and some money into it  and i gave reasonable amount for it

so  all in all i have around £1300  in it  but it has to go NOW. not LATER  so i realise i wont get it all back

i,v already had some interest from a couple of members on here

so  please guys help me out as i just want a trouble free time to try and get through this trouble in my  life

i hope you all understand   what i,m trying to say and sort out  but its very hard  for me to be in this situation  and all alone in the world

thank for  reading /listening

mike ..
